Suddenly his mate called to him tojunc-p; but, instead of doing so he waited long enough to give one more blow with his axe. and the delay proved fatal, for the next instant he fell into the moving mass of logs and his head was caught and crushed so badly that he was dead bef re he could be got out. McLaughlin, manufacturing chemist and manufacturer of mineral waters, was totally demolished shortly before 7 o’clock last Monday evening, by the explosion of the large boiler on the first floor of the building. The men employed in the works had left as usual at 6 o'clock. The noise of the explosion was heard half a mile distant, and the vibra- tions were distinctly felt in houses several blocks away. Following the explosion came a shower of bricks, sections of timber and glass. This debris rained upon the roofs of the houses, or mashed through windows, alarming neighbors and leading them to conclude that an earthquake shock had visited the city. Those who were in the immediate proximity at the time heard a deep-toned roar, and turning their eyes in the direction from which it issued saw the walls of the structure thrown outward, and the roof tossed in scores of fragments into mid-air. The hissing steam mingled with the flying bricks. whichfiewinathousand directions and smashed every pane of glass in the adjoiningresidences. Every wall ofthe structure was levelled with the ground. In the meantime the fire had communi- cated itself to the barn and as no assis- tance was at hand the barn was burned to the ground. Narrow Escaps or a Suva-non Lass. â€"Withln the last few months some start- ling sensations in the line of scandal have been developed in Peterborcugb, and an incident with even more serious acces. series was narrowly averted last week. A young Salvation Army girl who was in service with a family in the north end of the town has for some time been keeping company with a farm band who worked in the country a few miles from town. In the natural course of events the couple became er gaged and the wedding day was set for some time early in March. The impatience of the lover to have the ceremony come oi! at once was checked by his inamorata, who wished for time in which to prepare her trousseau. In his generosity the young man furnished the money wherewith to purchase the wedd- ing garments for the bride. As the officers of the Salvation Army always take a particular interest in the welfare and home lives of the members. the arrangements fer the approaching marri- age were scrutinizzd with a friendly learn that the bridegroom lose his position on the farm on the 20th of March. Surely, argued they, if such is the case there must be an Emioapian in the fence corner somewhere. A rigid investigation was inaugurated and the horror of the cfiialals may be readily imagined, when it is stated that it was ascertained that the man had already one wife living, from whom he had been separated for five years. The girl was made acquainted with the circumstances of the case and when the lover called on Saturday evening bearing with him an engagement ring, he received his “conge.” Much credit is due to the officials of the Army for thely prompt action in this matter. as a little delay would have cost the girl that which is most dear to woman â€"her honor and pure name.â€"{l-Ixamlner. -__________â€"â€" 'i’ho Optniou of An W.
