NEVER UNDER THE INFLUENCE New York,~ April aâ€"The Commercial Advertiser (Republican) prints a scorch- ingeditorial onthecharge made against President Cleveland in the New England M. E. ConferencebyDr. Lansing ofBos- ton. It fully endorses President Cleve- land's characterization of the attack as “simi'ilyan outrage" and of theeiergy- man himself as a “disseminatorof wholeâ€" sale lies and calumnies not less stupid than they are cruel and wicked." The Commercial Advertisersays: There ‘ isfartoomuchof this reckless defamr tion in our politics. It is proper tosay that the chief offender in this relation is not the press. At one period in history it might have been otherwise, but May the newspapers as a body lean :to fair ness. Shocking as the truth is. the sine! bearing false witness against public men has been transferred to the pulpit. The most recluse and the most monstrous charges come from clergymen. The oflence is greater because the pulpit is privileged and its utterances have, if not the force of inspiration, at all events the weight of traditional sincerity and associ- ations of sanctity. It is not without rea- son that the public mind resents the influ- ence of the “Priest in politics," since what he says is ex-cathedra. He is un- answerahle except when an outraged public opinion turns upon him as it turns upon the Rev. Dr. Lansing. Salem, Mast, April 9.â€"In the New England M. E. Conference yesterday Rev. C. E. Davis, chairman of the Temperance Committee, arose and said that Dr. I. J. Lansing’s attack on President Cleveland in his temperance address before the con- ference had placed the confean in a i l _ ‘_LA.I "JAVA-luv nun r-..“â€" rather embarrassing position and he asked the committee to meet him before the afternoon session. In view of thefact that the conference is in no way respon- sible for the ntteranws of Dr. Lansing and that Dr. Lansing holds himself re- sponslble for the statements he made. Mr. Davis’ request was voted down by an almost unanimous vote. - - n W -n n’ n“... 81me uuauuuvw v--. Buzzards Bay, Mass, April QLâ€"The charges made against President Cleveland by Dr. Lansing at Salem created great surprise among people here who are ac- quainted with the President and are in the habit of seeing him frequently during his residence how in the summer. Similar utterances are made by other people here who are occur tamed to see Mr. Cleveland trequently. Boston, April ilâ€"Rev. I. J. Iansing. whose references to the President in his address before the New Engand conference at Salem last Thursday night provoked extended criticism gave out the following statement last night: “My allusion made in a temperance ad- dress at Salem on Thursday. April 4, to the drinking habits of the President of the United States WM based commonly on common report and partly on the test- imony of eye-witnesses. From various and independent sources which I believed to be wholly reliable I had been informed that the President had been seen on : diflerent occasions and in the presence of many persons in an intoxicated condi- tion. mom the circumstantial and de- tailed character of these statements I sup posed there was no doubt as to the facts . alleged. I therefore made this allusion as a matter of common report, basing my confidence on the testimony of personal, and, as I supposed, credible witnesses. " The names of these witnesses obviously I cannot with propriety reveal since sharing their knowledge in common with many others they might justly shrink from being singled out and called to verify that of which not only they but others equally with themselves had ocu- lar mef. “I must therefore say that if my state- ment reproducing such testimony is not in harmony with facts I regret having made it. I could have neither desire nor motive for saying anything unkind or uncharitable of the President or of any party whatsoever. The case being one of conflict of testimony between witnesses of equal credibility I cannot decide.I have no personal knowledge apart from the testimony. I withdraw the statement and tender apologies and sincere regrets to the President of the United States and to the prime: ’ VUDUwaâ€"uâ€"_ 7 Cincinnati, April 9 â€"Five thousand coat makers quit work yesterday and by to-day it is estimated that the number will be increased 5,000 more. Some time ago the Liberal-Con- servatives organized here by electing OflicerS, and afterwards calling a conven- tion, which put Taylor McVeity and Honore Robillard. The old Conservatives are opposed to McVeity, and were disappointed at his getting the nomination Their own as- sociation became disorganized for lack of meetings. Now they have called a. meet- ing for Monday next for the purpose of reorganization. The new Conservative association, which nominated McVeity, will hold a. meeting on the same evening. There is a prospect of a big-sized row getting up between both associations, and the difficulty which arose at the last Provincial elections, and which has continued ever since, ceused by the old men in the party refusing to support McVeity when he ran for the Local Legislature, will get bigger instead household furniture was mortgaged for $50 and she was paying interest at the rate of 48 per cent. on the loan.
