It would he only fair to add say 170 of these votes to Mr. Kent’s hotel and reduce Mr. Bigo- low’l majority accordingly. Mr. Mac- dounld should not be discouraged. In Toronto Mr. Nelson Gordon Bigeo low, the reform candidate, was elected to ï¬ll the vacancy in the local house caused by the death of Mr. H. E. Clarke, who was Mr. Meredith’s ï¬rst lieutenant. The signiï¬cance of this victory cannot be over- estimated. It is not only an evidence of the personal popularity of Mr. Bigelow, but it is a decided endorsation of the general policy of the Mowat administra- tion. It is also a demonstration of the high personal regard in which Mr. Mowat himself is held, and a strong approval of his course as premier. Toronto is a con- servative strong-hold; and the conser- vatives looked upon the vacant seat as a dead sure thing for the man who received the nomination. The opportunity was a ï¬ne one for the election of a man of marked ability, to assist Mr. Meredith in opposition, and eventually to lead when the present leader is translated either to Ottawa or to the bench. But there seemed to be no one in the city willing to undertake the arduous duty; and the city tory “bosses†had not sufï¬cient disinterestedness to call upon talent from the country for the emergency. Why Lindsay. or even Peterhoro or Omemee, could have supplied the man for the occasion. A certain tory clique in the city selected one of themselves, to wit, Mr. H. A. E. Kent; and he was beaten by Mr. Bigelow by 816 votes. The full vote was not polled; but proba- bly as many reformers as conservatives didnot go to the polls.
