The New Jersey Legislature passed a law in 1889 empowering the board of freeholdcrs in any county to set aside certain roads as county roads und take charge of them, the cost of maintenance to be borne by the county. The bonds were empowered by this act to issue county bonds to raise money to ut the reeds in condition as first-class big ways. The freeholders’ board of Union County were the first to take advantage of thistw. They neiected thirty-five miles of ALA n Lsnl _.-.._ sLâ€"-.._L LI... road, the mfin highways through the county, set. them aside u county road; and voted to issue bonds to the mount of $300,- 000, to pay the cost. of macadamizing. Such unprecedented extravagance would plunge the county hopelessly in debt, raise the-taxes above boiling point, and ruin them all; such expenditure might be wise in a county like Esau, inehding large cities, but to entail auch a debt upon Union was rank idiocy. Nevertheless, the free- holdera pushed the preliminary work steadily forward, sent the engineers over the ground and took bid: for the work, which was portioned CROSS SECTION OF TELFORD-MACADAM ROAD. into sections. After the work we: under way the board Was confronted with the (act that $300,000 would not com let. the work undertaken. The dilemma ad the ususl two hornsâ€"leave the work incom- plete, or reise more money. The opgosi- tion was strong, but they conclude to raise the money and finish .. ‘ work ss originally plsnned, so additional bonds for 850,000 were Issued, rushing 3 totsl of $350,~ 000. At the extra. issue of bonds the dis- senters settled down in silent despair end suited for the result. It is now nearly 5 yenr since the com- pletion of the roads that give Union County the finest highways in the country. From Elizabeth, the county seat, they branch out in fan-shape through the county, to Rahway. to Plainfield, to Summit. At Elizabeth and Springfield they join with the Essex County a stem, that goes through Newark and the gunoul Oranges, giving fifty miles of first-class road between the extreme points, irom Pine Brooknin E:- sex County through Montclnir.
