ANNUAL MEETING IN LONDON A Large Attendance of Shareholders end a Good Deal of Excitementâ€"Other Directors also Resign â€" The Meeting Adjourned for a Week. Montreal, May 1.â€"The Star special cable report of the annual meeting of the Grand Trunk Railway Company in London says: The anxiously awaited annual meeting of the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada took place here yesterday. It was a packed one and grout excitement prcvallcd. When Sir Henry Tyler, who presided, arose he an- nounced the resignation of himself and the board of directors. He was received with cheers and groups from the difi‘crcnt sections of the meeting. Sir Henry Tyler said he hnd presided for the forty-sixth = and lust time. with more cheers, and silence on the part of his friends. Tho board of directors held a meeting yesterday morning previous to the annual meeting. It was reported to them that the committee of the dissatisfied shareholders hnd scoured a majority of the proxies against the board. The board. however, held the opinion that this had been accomplished by means of on unfair and misleading circular. The board also charges that the committee of share- holders have published on abstract which differs in many respects from the Barker report, and does not fnirly convey its substance. In n separate cit-culm- which had previously been issued the directors naked for the support of the pro- prietors and, referring to the opposition, they stntcllé This uuitnlion is carried on by n soil-constltiiie-ll committee without authority from i-Ill' com-mi imdy of pro: ili‘iclurs Mill _ opium-s to in: limibiy’ foinehicil by I=Iiv=h ig‘wiilu‘ (iniiiivnmtively slimll iiite‘i‘e’sl-s in IliHl-Hlilllitlif: 'i‘iiu deli: (Will afield: HI Ili‘ll; ullce‘iilliills in film: the pip-aunt llllruwleloiu nonunion uttim mull: pmuf is um: iu imammzltuumunt. wiluvms ill will in: mm inns in oil illlmplinl lulu: potatoes, lull only lIldi- ll- is duo in “locum: sinuous oilaii'oly lmymui the control of the boom. or uf lilo maumgoluunt in Canada, but also: that utoi'j possible Blill‘LIlill has been lmuiu by lilo strictest economy, to counteract the clients or" oxtroinu depres- sinu in business and low tutu of convoy- noon. The meeting, City Tux-minus iloiol, Cannon street, E. C., lasted two hours and was most excit‘ lug. Sir Henry ’l‘yicrs speech was a long which was hold at the one and was principally a justification of the ncquisit'on of the Chicago and Grand Trunk road. He guvo the charge of con- cealment laid against the board a. warm I l denial. It was absolutely necessary first that efforts should bu made to reduce the expenses of the company in' consequence of the great losses incurred by the pass- engcr and freight accounts. Under scoot stress and by rigid economy the expenses had been reduced by cutting the train service. This alone had saved £172,600, and during the whole your the expenses had been reduced about £135,000, against a. loss of receipts of £418,000. These ex. tmordinary savings had been made in the expenses of a. railway that had always been conducted under a system of great economy. The adverse results, he said, were due to the continuous decline in rates since 1883, the competition of the numerous railways, including the Guns. dian Pacific, the general paralysis of the business, and the lower prices in Europe. In closing his farewell speech he paid a. high tribute to the stafl of the company in Canada. Sir Henry then moved the adoption of the reported accounts, having for u. see- onder Mr. Wm. Unwin-Heigate. Mr. Gilderston, the chairman of the committee of dissatisfied shareholders,st manager of the Bristol docks. re-afi‘lrmed the committee’s charges against the board, and announced, amid loud cheers, that Sir Charles Rivers-Wilson, lute Con- trollor of the National Debt, and Govern- ment Director of the Suez Canal, re- organizer of the Egyptian Finances, and of the Central Pacific Railway of the Uni- ted States, bud promised to give his most careful consideration to the offer of the presidency of the company which the committee had made him. The committee desired Messrs. Hubbard, Allen and Brock to remain on the board under Sir Charles Rivers-Wilson. It was moved irhut the directors be re- questcd to hold ihclr rcsignntions at the dispusul of tho committee until the luttcr mom-gnome the board, and that eight; of thc lmgcst slmrciwhicrs bo milled in tho cmmniitcc, and that; thc iiicctiiig he ud- juurm-li till Moy ‘l'.
