The first meeting in the ampeizn for Mr. Mcfiugh, held last night in Lindsey, we: a decided success. Hon. Geo. W. meintained his high reputation as one 9f the as to questions of revenue ahd expendi- ture showed that all the great interests of the country would be safe with reform leaders in power. He showed in the most convincing way that the time had come for a change ; that the extravagance and corruption that had so long prevailed would be intensified under the Tupper regime; that coercion was unwise and dangerous ; that economy. prudence, honest expenditure, investigation and conciliation were required, andzwould be the policy of the reform leader. Mr. Rose‘s speech was one that many conser- vstives would applaud and act upon, and it will have a powerful effect upon the public mind in this riding. A feature of the evening was the first address by the venerable Thomas Ray, of Ops, (now in his 88th year) who bore warm testimony to the worth of Mr. Geo. McBugh and his father and other relatives, and especially to their ccur- ageous adherence to reform principles under the most trying circumstances. nevus), u...â€" .v--_- suppress them for the time being, and go with. the party on the understanding that it'll be all right in the end. The try to “ hurrah ” them or “jolly " them. Now, we cannotquite_ understand these gentlemen. They are trying to humbug us all. And the peop!e of Ontario, of Toronto. the conservatives of Toronto, are not in the humor of being humbugged. . The World theretore begs to extend its most distinguished felicitetione to some worthy gentlemen who have been trying to make us believe that the "school quea. tion doesn't amount toenything"; “ that it‘s best to keep quiet, anyway,” and that there is no difl'erenee between a reme- dialist conservative and‘ an anti-reme- diaHSt conservative, TheWorld belongs to the latter kindL’nnd prete‘ntohent with hounded thesemepeekfi' ' Mr. Geo. McHngh made a most effective address. He dealt in a clear way with general questions, and then, with a manly courage and candor that received rounds of hearty applause, he denounced the unworthy attempts that had been made to turn electors against him by appeals to religious prejudices. These tactics had not been openly dis- played, but along the side lines and on street corners, where it would be safe and quiet for the time. The ignoble appeal was. “Could you vote for a Roman Catholic like Geo. McEngh?" and sundry strong descriptive terms were added by these parties to make the appeal more effective. Mr. McHugh's plain speaking, and his pointed reference to a personage no less than the president of the comer- vative association of South Victoria, and, well known doctor, prominent and active in the conservative ranks. as leading ofienders in this diacreditable course, were quickly appreciated and heartily applauded by the audience. Mr. Mc- Huzh did well to denounce such un- _â€"_.._ v, worthy tactics. His declaration as to his own course in regard to the leading public question of the day was clear and ma sly, and characteristic of the courageous man who addressed the electors. George Mc- Hugh is no “wobbler” or trimmer, his course is clear, and every one can under- stand it. It is worthy of the support of the electors, and we believe this support and confidence will be given in such generous measure that George McHugh will be placed at the head of the poll by a majority‘ that will be a lesson to those who are making unworthy appeals against him. Such we believe will be the answer of the people of Canada of all classes to the unworthy appeal of Sir Chas. Tupper- not to place in power a Frenchman and a Roman Catholic who would go further than he had gone in remedial legislation. The reformers never raised against Sir John 'Thompson the question of his religion. It is an ignoble appeal, and it should be frowned upon and stamped out. “WOBBLING” AND “JOLLY_ING.” ha‘ We mpleuodtobouhletomnounee smeeting to be helduOAkvoodinu” intent: of Mr. George WEN“, the libenl cmdidnte. to 5° “Md byflon: Sir Oliver Mom Pm 0‘ Ontario. wâ€" vâ€"- v- The people of unripe“ ere excremely fortunate ln being nhle to look forward to hearing Sir Oliver, as it eon well be un- derstood that very my requests for his presence from other pert: of the province are continually being rude. At the present time it would take shout forty millions of dollars to redeem his promises. No wonder this wholesnle attempt to bribe the country with its own money causes thoughtful men to ssk “Whither are we drifting ?" ~ No man should hesitate-each one con do something to help to redeem South Victoria. But it must be orgsnized work. In every polling subdivision, in every school section, there should be regular committee meetings, and discussion, end the bringing in of those who are wavering or uncertain. We will not have the op- portunity after the 23rd of June. Just now there is it little less urgency amongst the farmers to compel them to work, and whilst they are still busy each men could give two or three evenings in the week to see that everything is being done to secure victory. .Do not wait for some one else to begin. It is your own individual work. Speak to your neighbor ; arrange ftr meetings ; apply to the central organizstion for information if any is required. or for speakers, and any assis- tance that can be rendered will be cheer- fully given. But do not delay. Organ- , ize thoroughly. _Your csndidateis work- ‘ inn uncessingly. In Nova Scotia and Manitoba there is a perfect laud slide towards the liberal cause. Scores of manufacturers in Ontario have expreued their confidence in themselves and in their country, and declare that: the liberal policy of revenue tariff is satisfactory to them, and that with raw material made free they will be ready and willing to compete with the world in our markets.
