Mr. Dalton McCarthy’s amendment to ‘ the Abbott-Thompson gerrymander bill was the occasion of a very interesting debate in the commons Tuesday afternoon. Mr. McCarthy condemned the present gerrymander, and admitted that a wrong had Men done in passing the gerry- mander of 1882. He thought the govern- ment was strong enough to do what was right and to undo the wrong of 1882. Mr. Haggszt spoke for the ministry and defended the gerrymander. He thought Mr. McCarthy would have been wiser had he stated his objections to the members of the government, and rather severely criticised Mr. McCarthy’s course in the premises. Mr. Haggart found, however, that he had struck a snug, and he got a little more than he bargained for. At a that he had struck a snag, and ne goo a little more than he bargained for. At a later stage in the debate Mr. McCarthy made a sensation in the house by explain- ; ing that he had stated his objections to the leader of the government, but “it u was quite true that he had not consult- M ed the minister of railways (Mr. Hag- " gart) as he had not fallen so low as to u acknowledge him as his leader.†The retort will be applauded in not a few con- servative circles. Mr. Haggai-t must be too strong a dose for respectable conser- vatives, though the party is saddled with him just as it is saddled with Caron, be- cause they were active in boodle manipula- tion and know so much about levying and distributing corruption funds that the premier-even if so inclinedâ€"dare not dispense with their services. The question of establishing a suitable memorial to the late Hon.
