aha North Victoria will be held in Dickson's hall, Fenelon Falls, on Tuesday, July 10th, 1894, for the purpose of nominating acmdidate to contest the riding at the approaching election for the house of commons. It is important that there should be a good representution of liberals from all parts of the riding, thet the candidate having the greatest politics! strength may be chosen. no“ 10min: fl!" naive a tan yen!" “ Year after year the Can on the even tenor of its way, circle of its patrmw, dispensim its inedi- structure mahle beneï¬ts and rearing its great ' «31'ka The four on sound ï¬nancial pru comer stones on which the Canada Life has been built up are Economy, Integrity, Liber- ality and Stability. ranch- In tom, ' â€.Q “. ‘ . nct me. A second time has the banner riding emphasized, by an overwhelming majority, its faith and con- ï¬dence in Ontario’s G.U.M. Dr. McKay has every right to feel proud. The victory, it is true, is attributable to the beautiful record for truth. probity and justice of Sir Oliver, yet the personal popularity of Dr. McKay counted greatly in the con- test. Wherever his home influence extended his vote piled up enormously, so much so as to strike down all party lines and turn adverse majorities into minori- ties. This is the more remarkable. be- cause the patron candidate was a neighbor, destined, it is expected, on that account, to attract from Dr. McKay in his personal strongholds. The campaign was conducted with tremendous vigor on all sides. Its triangular aspect created and sustained the doubt, never absent from the start, as to what the result would be, and this doubt was the spur to enthusiasm displayed by the ï¬ghting liberals from the very word ‘go.’ Then Mr. Campbell claimed, and was known, to be a reformer, and for this reason, it was felt, endangered Dr. McKay’s chances by splitting the liberal vote, but the splendid organization of the party, the ï¬ne snap and vim thrown into the contest, and the skilful handling of the reins by Mr. President McHugh, landed our candidate the victor by a plurality of 468. On the whole, the con- test was free from bitterness, yet cause for such was not absent. In localities where it was thought sectarianism would do its work for the tory party, prejudice and passion was appealed to, but the country has become so heartily sick of sectional cries that they now fall flat as “ditch water,†and like ditch water, they simply soil and dirty the party and the men who stir them up. We absolve Mr. Bryans from any part in the advent of Mrs. Shepherd to our fair town; but we cannot free the head centre of conservatism in Toronto from responsibility, and just as toryism in Lindsay is akin to toryism in Toronto, must the party here feel the disgrace and suffer the punishment for the most digusting spectacle ever seen in a political campaign. The insult was less to Catholics than to Protestants. The former res: easy in the satisfaction that the woman was hired to lie. The latter are chagrine‘l and humiliated with the dread that conversion to the faith yet permits a woman to brazen an audience and publish her shame for 15 cents ahead. It is no satisfaction to the liberal party now to know that this sort of warfare was like a boomerang in the hand of an African. The Warder has always pro~ fessed to be against meetings for men (r women only, but in Mrs. Shepherd’s case the local tory organ advertised her freely, and gave her otherwise the beneï¬t of local reference. It is a relief to turn from the asperities of the contest. Our Wu friends will not be disappointed at the rank The high character for probity and honor of the men who led them leaves no doubt of honesty of purpose.
