Aug. 12.â€" Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins of Canton, who were camped on Lee’s Point, Rice Lake, left camp yesterday for Bewdley inan ordinary sized skifl‘ to get their mail. Miss Moyboc, 16-year-old' daughter of Mr. Benjamin Maybce of Rossmount. accompanied them on their return to camp. When about three-quar- ters of a mile from camp a storm overtook them and a heavy squall struck the boat- upsetting it and throwing the three cccu pants into the water. The disaster was witnessed by a number of people on the shore, but owing to the violence of the storm no help could be rendered to the unfortunate victims, who could be seen clinging to the upturned boat. When the storm had subsided, which it did very quickly, boats put out for the scene of the accident, but only the empty upturned boat was found, the three occupants having gone down to a watery grave. Search was at once instituted, and it was stated this morning that they were successful in recovering the bodies. An eye-witness says when the squall struck the boat every call that it could carry was set. and before they could be lowered the boat turned over. the mast sticking in the soft mud at the bottom, as the water was shallow. The occupants were thrown out and immediately grasped the bottom of the boat. Miss Maybce was not fortunate enough to secure a hold of the boat, and fell back in the water. Mr. Hawkins on seeing this went to her assis- tance. and in all probability would have succeeded in rescuing her had not Mrs. Hawkins at this critical moment released her hold on the boat. It in nu posed that the two women clung to Mr. awklna for safety,'aud in this way he was deprived of the use of his swimming powers, and the three sank beneath the waves. It is grand work this year, as the results will be far ahead of last year, and farmers are in splendid spirits. The rain of Sunday has bencfltted roots and pastures. A business revival and a line fall and winter trade may be looked for with confidence. A Vienna dospatch says: “Bad weather is spoiling the crops in many districts in Austria and Hungary. It is impossible to harvest on account of continuous rain. A hurricane yesterday in Lower Austria Moravia and Upper Hungary destroyed the season’s vintage. In the Gumpolds kirchen district may of the rivers have overflowcd and the adjacent country for miles is inundated. Several persons have been killed by falling trees and houses."
