Ellis, who has been in ‘ British Columbia for the past tour years. in which he gave much interesting inform. ation concerning the mining boom now in progress there. For some time after his arrival in the Pacific province Mr. Ellis acted as secretary-treasurer tor a theatri cal troupe. and in travelling about the country fell in with many old miners who had prospected in manv districts. and who pronounced the Trail Creek re ion one of the most promising. Upon t e termin- ation of his engagement with the company Mr. E iis visited Russiand with a miner friend, and after a couple at weeks'etay they staked out several claims. Since then he has gone on acquiring properties whenever a favorable opportunity offered. and now holds thirteen in all, one of them being known as the British Lion, from which some very rich are specimens have been taken out. Mr. Ellis has received offers for several of his properties, but in- tends holding on to them for the present, as the development of the surrounding mines and the tracing of leading veins will undoubtedly increase the value of his holdings. According to the B. C. mining laws, Mr. Elia has to pertorm $100 worth of work on each claim yearly, and in his letter he admits that to do so is quite a “pull” on his purse, but he sees thous- ands ahead of him. The Barrie school board has just: estab- lished a filth form in its public school, in accordance man the rules of the education departments, and unlike the Lindsey board, took the parents into their confidence by sending them the following cirenlar: 1 “Under the new regulation of the educa- tion department, a fifth form will be open. ed in the Central school on Tuesday, 82h inst (:emporarily in the basement of the Ross block). The intention clearly is to make the public school the people’s college, and to give there, without the expense of attendance at the Collegiate Institute, a thoroughly sound English and business or commercial education to such pupils as do not desire to enter prefessional life or take up the study of foreign langu es. The subjects of the course are: Rea ing, Eng- lish Grammar, Rhetoric, English Composi- tion, English Poetical Literature, History. Geography, Arithmetic, Mensuration, Al- gebra. sawing, Bookkeeping, Writing, Geometry (or Botany). A thoroughly com- petent master has been ergaged to take the class, and should the class be taken advantage of as generally as its merits do- serve, the board of trustees hope at an early date to include in the course short- hand and practice in tgPewriting. The fifth form class was esta ished to provide free education to such pupils as do not wish to take any other subjects than those necessary to a thoroughly sound English and commercial education, and who, therefore. do not attend a high school at all or do so only for a short time. The course in bookkeeping includes: Back- keepin by single and double entry, com- merci forms and general business transactions.” In Lindsay many of our citizens who are ill able to afford the upense are pinching and striving to pay the Collegiate fees an 4-- uni- "an an a good sound ednm- lontn‘l. vainchl ............ ........sop6.1m E“ m W-cnunoou- no...
