Wu, v' ‘ " wwmm,‘ «mm In}, my... a”. Wm Wm”. .3. Mr. Sutherland’s opponents, unn- ble to find fault with his record as a public man, have entered upon a course of personal villifimtion. But as usual, their evil chickens have gone home to roost ‘ amongst those from whenee they come. We have nothing to say about Mr. Quinn, as a private individual-35 a. journalist it is none of our business to meddle with him in that matter. But we believe they are few indeed who will demur to the assertion that in this respect Mr. Sutherland is at least equally as eligible as Mr. Quinn. To the position to‘ which he “seeks elec- tion Mr. Sutherland will bring the qualifications of experience in muni- cipal 'afiaim, tact. energy, enterprise, - ‘u‘o upona to e Ise lCll‘ independently and with discretion, regardless of party predilections or sectionalism, choosing whom they think best, wholly and solely for their individual fitness for the posi- tion. - In the Market Block negotiations Mr. Quinn occupied the unenviable position of agent for the purchase of property from himself, and his whole course in the transaction has an! awk- ward appearance of self predominat- ing over the public interest. No one will deny that the consciousness that every false step will be carefully noted, and brought .Ip against him at the close of his stewardship. is a strong incentive to diligence and circumspection on the part of a public servant. He showed greater prudence and administrative ability in dealing with the esplanade question, thoroughly acquainting himself with the law upon the sub- ject, and advising action whitinfiile securing all the advantages that the Corporation could possibly have ex- torted by law, conciliated a. Company which might otherwise have' given fewer favours and great trouble. It must have surprised Mr. Quinn’s sup- porters to heal-that gentleman ac- knowledge, before the close of the meeting, that the provisions of the iamand the critical position in which hisown ignorance thereofâ€"if not wil- fully selfish blindneSsâ€"had placed the Corporation, and from which Mr. Sutherland had guided them, were before unknown to him, and he expressed himself as being glad that some one had taken pains to ascer- tain what. they ought-to do. A. very humiliating confession, certainly, for one who had but a. short time pre- viously boasted of his superior busi- ness qualifications, and'greater exper- ience in municipal affairs. D’Arcy Boulton, Esq., Grand Mas- ter of Western Ontario, said it was now approaching twenty years since he first heard Sound Protestant prin- ciples . enunciated from the lips of the gentlemanwho just preceded him, and uponthat same platform. Orangeism warred not with the indi- vidual, but with a system, and Wil- liam III. went to England not to enslave but to' give liberty to the Roman, Catholic, and the Society labours still to preserve that liberty not only_fpr themselves but for their fellow subjects, of whatever class or creed. He warned his hearers against the insidious advances of Jesuitism in the guise of Ritual'ism and Tmetarianism, urging an adhe- rence on the part of Churehmen to the good, old simple forms which their fathers had used. The Society was not a secret society, only in so far as was necessary to protect them from imposition. He advocated the adoption of the Temperanceplatform in connection with their Lodges, and also the formation of a Society of Orange Sisters. At the close of his address, Mr. Boulton paid a high complimenttotheBan'd. which, he said, is a credit to Orillia. Much disappointment was felt at the ab- sence of Lieut.-Col. Ogle "R. Gowan, the founder of Orangeism in Canada, who had been expected to address the meeting, but was delayed by the train being snowed sup, and did not reach Orillia until past eleven, p. m. At the conclusion of the speaking, a spirited contest took place between the admirers of two youngjladies, as to which should carry‘ofl'a the cake that had been, presented to the in- stitutionâ€"Missfi-S‘lunkett being the fortunate winn‘ér.
