The general manager, Dunn, the ovexseer, Mr. Richardson, and between 40 and 50 others, men and boys, were in the mine at the time. Of these only four men‘ have been rescued. . The managers of the neighbouring mines are on the round, and with their men are do- ing all that men can do. The F ire Company near New Glasgow, with theiJ engine, are at work trying to save the buildings on the surface, which are now tl‘xrentcnell by the flames coming from the slopes. The exact number of persons lost is not yet known. The scene at the mine is heat-trending, with the relations mourningr for those lost. The cause of the tire Was an explosion of gas from a blast fired by the coal cutters in one of the boards. The fix-enum- municated with the gas in the other parts of the mine, and immediately caused the first fearful explosion, which cut of? all escape from the workmen. The men Izzy] only rem sumed Work to day after a strike. from the slope or entrance w an: mine, and cries were heard at the bottom of this shaft. ROpes and men were immediately prUCurad, and with their assistance the four men above mentioned were rmued, but before any more could be taken out the fire reached the shaft and another fearful explosion took place, cutting otf all hopes of saving any more lives from this point. Four men who had volunteered to descend this shaf t to assist their fellow-work- men, and who were in the act of do- ing so, were blown up when the ex- plosion occurred. The mine is still burning fearfully. Volumes 0f dense smoke and flames are issuing from the slope and the shaft. N0 hopes are entertained of saving any more lives. There is a.
