The following sensible letter, writ- ten by an intelligent immigrant now in our Free Grant district, deserves consideration. It was addressed to Mr. Donaldson, immigration agent at Toronto:â€" BRACEBRIDGE, Aug. 19, 1873. SmmAlter leaving the line of mil from Toronto to Orillia, although 1 am not given to form hasty con- clusions I could well understand how the nature o£-the road from Washago and Graveuhurst, and even perhaps the trip up Muskoka. Lake \rould cause the heart of the poor settler to sink with him, but I trust that it is now well known, even by emigrants, that this is no criterion of the country what ever. When I got to Bracebridge I deemed it more ‘ prudent to spend three or four days in the vicinity of the village itself. l After ï¬shing up all the information l I could get in this part I started off ‘ to see the settlers and land along the line and branch of Stephenson ‘ road. I pushed as far in the direc- tion as the settlements extended at least. and have been agreeably sur- prised with what I have seen. There is no use in keeping dark the fact that a portion 'of the land is poor, but this I ï¬nd, as the settlers select their own lot-s, does not militate in the least against the general state- ments that a. hard-working man with the essential quality of perse- verance, can not only manage to live but in a. comparatively short time (shorter in some eases than I expect- ed) msy become entitled to his eed, which carries with it such practical benefits as most tend to the eleva- tion of his whole nature. This may seem a queer view of the matter, but from what I know of the habits of 722': FREE em DISTRICT. my own loved land I would say most em phatienll'y that a settler here on ï¬ndinih‘imself become the actual owner of ' land must, if of the na- 3 ture of ordinary. men, be improved even in-that which constitutes his manhood. I have only returned to the British Lion, having been well round. I have been delighted with the scenery and iinproved vastly in my health. The climate here during my stay seems to me more healthy and better than that of any other part of the country I have yet been ‘in. In regard to the settling of im- lmigmnts in Mnskoh, yhile I have sash a favorable view of the country, on the whole I would be wantihg. . indeed, if in my letters home I did I not hold out a warning to each in- tending emigrant to examine himself well as to' whether he promises with- in himself the conditions ol success which Itake to be here, even more than in some other parts of the world -â€"strict sobriety, a strong arm, and stout heart, thorough energy and perseverance with a frugal saving disposition. If a man W these and make a judicious selection of land it seems to me that if he starts under proper family circumstances his success may be declared before- hand notwithstanding every diï¬cul- ty. Speaking of the selection of land I do not know whether immi- grants should not receivcsome assist- ance from the Government. I can , see well enough how mischievous a policy it would be for Government ofï¬cers to select the lots or even to ‘ bias the mind in favor of or against any district, but I do think that im- migrants might safely be informed of the permanent importance ol‘ob- taining good land, independent of its neamess to or distance from roads, and so in other matters of a like kind. They may receive this in- formation, and I may be wrong in thinking they should receive it, but I have been led into the thought by seeing some persons situated on lines of roads, notso well satisï¬ed as others are in more backward parts. I will go around some other districts even yet, but I know that wherever I may go I am certain to get a repiti- tion of the calm-{cams which have " induced me to form the opinions ex- pressed‘in this letter. __ 1--.... L: .J-no ,. wvvâ€" -r. I enclose you the return ticket. Having had the two together the guards happened to mark both. I remonstrated once, and was rather i‘nsolently informed by both con- ductors that this ticket would not carry me back on the line of road at all. “’ill you kindly make this right for me.
