Canada. 1' Exporienco has taught us, tint the printing fraternity of this section are laboring nndorn great mistake in re- ference to municipal printing. It is a. fact that can’t be gainâ€"sawed, and the fraternity have no one to blame but. themselves, that this class of printing is being done to-dny, at from one half to one third its actual \‘Ilue. Why is this? Simply because, to get it some will do it at these prices. There is no reason why any municipality should not pay acttnl value {or the work done. It is the duty of municipal officials to save every dollar they can in printing as well as other matters, and no blame ; can be attached to tlaem. But thoue‘ doing it for such low figure- ure to blame. The amount of work done can- not be estimated by tho uninitntod. ONTARIO, XS PUBLISHED EMILY COUNCIL. LINDSAY. Publisher and Proprietor 15 :3- 00 m 00 00 in I In the minds of a good nigzrij. I otherwise sensible people to corn duct :1 weekly paper, it is only i necessary for an editor to look over his exchanges and clip and paste untill the form is full, when out their sheet comes and everybody gets their cepy of it That would be very nice indeed. But such people will forget the acres of paper the editor will look Over to find a paragraph that may prove of interest to his readers or the time that it takes him to condense a half column account into a paragraph. Then he should be out around town looking up items of local affairs and at the same time‘his place is in the office look- ing after the work and provide cepy for the “devils ” who try to drive him crazy with vells {or “ copy.” . He should also be out around nf town looking up work and adver- 1- tisements, for even the most ob-i d] Tdo WUUCmRnGF .www-qv- tuse will readily see that the annual one dollar for the price of the paper will not long keep the pot boiling or the presses in motion. At the same time he has his books to post up, his accounts to make out and bills collecting itors and pressman ; rent, fuel, stock, light and other running ex- penses to prowde; act as his own i i l to get money to pay the compos-I foreman in making up forms, he proof reader, reporter and editor all in one. These area few things that the country editor has to do or get snowed under and that} very quickly. After doing,r these thingstothe best of his ability and broueht out his paper, he is met by some saphead with the sapient remark, “1 find a word mispelled here,” or “a word was mispelled there." Is it any won- der that such will get a short answer once in a while? Is it any wonder that country editors grow bald, turn grey and die young? All the more that those who take the paper never think of payingr for it until the end of the year, and perhaps not then, but expect him to hire a rig and go after it. or take a trip on the train and spend twice the amount due in collecting it. Oh, the way of the f transgressor may he hard, but the f 1 wax; the unfortunate editor has to l l plod is infinitely harder. Who Could Not Edlt a Count: Paper. Fowls that are plump and have plenty of meat on the breast will always sell well rm market. The carcass, however, depends on the breed. To know which should be preferred it may be stated that the breeds that are the most ac- tive and fly the highest have the most meat on the breast. This is easily explained. as the ability to fly implies great muscular powers, and the muscles are main- ly on the breast. The Games, Dorkings and exert the Leghorns. are plump on the breast. and they cannot fly over a high fenca. Brahmas can fly and they have but little breast meat. The Lang- shans and Cochins are apparently of the same stock, but when u fowl of both breeds is dressed for market, the Lungshan will be found much superior, as it has a large proportion of meat on the breast. Winter laying requires warm quarters and plenty of food. The size of the cow and the ampunt of food eaten are 229 m- dication of what she will do at the pail or what the milk wiH churn out. It may be a little early to look after the grain supply for next winter's feeding, but preparations can now be made to insure secur- ing a good supply of “greens” {or the winter feeding. The root CI‘Op, rutabagas, turnips, beets, onions, small potatoes, and cab- b ages, are all especially desirable for winter feeding and :ch really among the essentials if eggs are desired. The coarse grains are cl «in this Winter and hay is geneiall} scarce ifnot dear. In most cases for their nutritive value the marge grains like corn and oats are quite as cheap as hay or straw. They are much better for young stock, which needs to get its nutrition in a form that will not take it all day to digest it. That is the trouble in feeding exclu- sively on straw and other course fodder. The animal can do no morethan sustain life. and after be- ing stunted all winter its digestion is so injured that it never recovers. Keep the \oung stock groxxing and it will be better 101 it during all its after life. This 1sthetn1l<c§ killinqsc‘nson, and while the lsugést turkexs arc usually most salable, it is 11 ell for those who intend to contmuc breeding to save two our more of the old turkeys a secoud and even athird year. Such turkeys will produce stronger and thrifter chicks, less likclx to be tendei and injured bx \xet \xeather. 'lhc “ild turkms alxxafi mate with the old and strong gobblers and in this may they attam greater hardiness than has oui domestic fowl.
