Millbrook was . in town yesterday. But perhaps the most elevating and reï¬ning items on the programme were the two choruses from Gounod's Faust. The Mirror has heard these given many a time by trained professionals, but, and it is only simple justice to say so, never did it hear them better rendered than on this occasion. That there should be found in this Village 25 voices that could be trained to sing as those sang who took part in these chor- uses, speaks volumes for the musical talent of Omemee and for the ability and knowledge of their conductor. With such talent as this at its service, Omemee need never go outside of its own boundaries for a ï¬rst-class musical entertainment. Besides the Convention and the choruses, songs were sung by Miss Clancy of Omemec and Miss Graham of Peterboro, and by Messrs. R. J. Mulligan and W. G. Stephenson; piano solos by Miss Gumpricht, of Peterboro, and Miss McPherson, Omemee, and a recitation by Miss Kathleen Graham, all given with great taste and skill. Emily Township’s new road grader is doing its ï¬rst work on Omemec Main St., and it does good service. Mr. 105. Mitchell. Agent for the Sawyer 38: massey Messrs E. Rowland and A. Evans, are in town visiting friends. The chief item in the programme, at least that which took most time, was “The Spinsters’ Convention.†The giv- ing of this occupied about an hour and a half, which was, to the audience, an hour and a halfof unrestrained and unâ€" interrupted laughter, varying in degree from the gentle titillation to the loud outburst. It would not have been be- lieved, beforehand, that the young ladies of Omemee possess such marked dramatic talent as was shown by them in their rendition of this diï¬icult burles- que. Had the ladies performing this piece been a job lot from Lindsay or even from Peterborough, one would not have been surprised at them giving this play true to life, it would have been quite natural and easy for them to do so; but that the young ladies of this village who, as everyone knows, are famous far and near for their vivacity, youth and beauty, could transform themselves into typical spinsters, is a thing hard to realize; but when it 'is remembered that they kept this up for an hour and a half and did it with such spirit and naturalness that it was hard to believe that they were not what they seemed to be, the thing becomes won- derful. And the question naturally arises where did they get their models? Not in Omemee surely, perhaps they have travelled east and west. The accompanists were Mrs. R. J. Mulligan and Mr. G. Norris, and it is needless to say that their work was well done. ship. The proceeds were nearly $90, which will be of great use to the Library Board The managers of the Omemee Pub- lic Library are to be heartily congratu Iated upon the success which attended their last annual concert. 'l‘hat renown~ ed individual, “the oldest inhabitant†whose word is never doubted, declares that he cannotrecall any entertainment, ever given in the village, that gave more pure enjoyment, or that in any way could be regarded as more successful than this one. The Opera House, was packed from end to end, and it is sale to say that there was not one in the im~ mense audience who was dissatisï¬ed with the pleasure and amusement af- forded him. The only adverse criticism heard was to the effect that there was too much of these good things. The Public Library Concert. BORN. In Emily, on Tuesday, April 14th, to Mr and Mrs. Calvin E. It is rarely, indeed, that the people of a village of the size of Omemee have the privilege of listening to such exquisite singing as that of Mr. and Mrs. Killin- ~Keough, and the Woodmen deserve the thanks of all the music loving people of the community for their enterprise in bring- ing such a talented company to the vil- lage. It is true great things were ex- pected from the Company from the press notices which preceded them, but these expectations were more than rea- lized. The rendition by Mrs. Killin- Keough, of the great scenes from the operas of La “'l‘raviata’ and “Faust,†were such as one expects to hear only in the great city; and it must have been quite a rev:lation to many in the aud- ience. The singing of Mr. Keough, himself, could not easily be too highly praised. He came to us indeed with a very high reputation, but that reputa- tion was amply sustained by every piece that he sung. Perhaps to many in the audience the part in the program that gave to them the greatest pleasure was the exquisite duets rendered "by Mr. Keough and Mrs. Killin-Keough. The perfectly harmonious blending of two such ï¬ne voices was a pleasure long to be remembered. Every number on the program was encored, to which the Company responded with great good nature. Miss Brown, of l’eterborough, acted as accompanist, and when it is stated that the singers, themselves, were delighted with her work, one feels that no higher praise could be given. She also gave two piano solos in such a way as showed that she was a pianist of great ability. ‘ . It is safe to say that if the Woodmen in their future entettainments will keep up the high. standard of their Concert of Monday evening last. they may al ways depend upon being well patroniz- ed by the people of Omemee. Rev. W. M. Kannawin, B. 1)., acted as chairman in a very acceptable man ner and in doing so took occasion in a few well chosen words to explain the merits of the order, and the great work it was doing.
