The Boers deserted one big kopje and several smaller ones when we lay to from IO till 4 while the mounted infin- try liiOvt.d round to the left. There 1 was no demur made to our next ‘ advance which ended at the top ofa tremendous Kopje, we were to hold :it to ensure the capture of ‘500 Boers and some guns. The Brigadier said it was rather hard but an Opportunity not to be miss- ed. Our men had hardly reached the top when the Brigadier rode back to the ammunition carts and told our Seargeant to in span at once and get the carts away as the Boers were coming On in large numbers and to tell the Col. to hold the hill till after dark, make a demonstration and slip quietly away, well we did get the cart away and got back to town in the dark by a road that the Boers held in the morning. The regi- ment got back at 11 an hour be- hind us. Sunday was a day of some rest for our regiment but the shelling Went on in the north and east. The Boers have some good guns throwing shell clear over our R. H.and almost into our camp. It is reported that French captur- 3 ed 90 Boer waggons. We close l the month by moving north west ‘ at 6 a. m Alter we had gone ‘ about 4 miles the ï¬ght became hot Rifles, Pom-poms, Quickfiring guns etc. At noon the Boers be- gan shelling our Convov with their long range guns-forcing it to leave the road and take shelter in a de- pression.
