How far can chil- dren really be moulded ? The June" issue of Night and Day is prefaced by a statement “ From the Ab; sent Editor,” from which it, appears that owing to ill-health Dr. Barnardo has had for a while to leave his work to the care of others. He earnestly asks friends “ not to permit his great family of Wait Children to starve during his absence”; an appeal which the Com- mittee endorse. Newton . Hill, who delivered a very interesting sermon. Mr. Hill also preached to the ()rangemen at Lebanon in the after- noon. S. has given the Canadian public a. very graphic description of English schools, particularly those onorkshire, and does not paint them in very hril- liant colors. He has however, given them ample justice and is entirely out of harmony with the system. He states that the Yorkshire schools were noteworthy for flogging, but that the boys did not receive one half what they required to prepare them for future life. Iwill agree with him on that point, and go still further and say [know one who did not receive one quarter what he merited, for he is still ...l.n frunnnnt‘v 30 50 Lilla! 561 u “nu .u. ".v. ..,, a very rude little boy who frequently writes in the Omemec Mumon. I do not consider it necessary to write again, because W. S. has not ad- 'anced a. single idea in opposition to our schools in his last letter, but rather has so completely coincided with the arguments contained in my previous letter, as to place him in the position of one defeated, and he cannot after such a , complete coincidence take up arms to light again. I give him credit for his action and respect him because he has been sensible enough to see his mistake and willing to acknowledge it, as he has done in his last letter, That‘s right \V. S. plead for mercy at the education bar in Toronto, for the em you have committed in writing that corrupt letter, a short time ago, and I’m quite conti- dcnt llon. G. W. Ross will grant the ahsolution. I do not write this entirely as a public letter, but rather as a private ‘ epistle to W. S. giving him my reSpect ‘ and host wishes since he has come out and openly declared his mistake and wronglul actions, but I must criticise his composition. A. . 1- ,.-L ‘.AI'A lunt‘ as 111: \quu “walnut-u First he states that I must have had Chesterfield as a pocket companion, and again that I surely read Nicholas Nickehw. I must confess I have never read rither works, but I would strongly advise \V‘. S. to procure a copy of the former immediately, even though he be obliged to borrow it, if it has such a tendency to elevate men to be looked upon as gentlemen. It is particularly ‘ adapted to his case, and I advise him by all means to procure one, for therein he will find the first principles of a gentleman. He has also recourse to flattery and very kindly informs me that my letter was greatly appreciated by the interested ‘buhlie. This is no doubt intended to convert me, now a thorn in his side, into a beautiful and fragrant rose. Beware of the llatterer for while he yet pretends to be thy friend in such a m oment as as \‘e think not, he will strike thee to the heart with his liery darts poisoned with deceit. , If he wishes to know how 1‘ View that part ofhis Composition he had better read -Esop’s Fables, in one of our pub- lic salmol text books, dwelling pa'ti- cularly upon that one about the boy and the wolfe. W. 8., to Come out before :1 Wise people and make such an absurd statenien. Do you think for one moment that the Canadian public have any desire to attend Eng- lish schools?
