Marble Works of Omemee, was much surprised and delighted at the sight of their tine display of magnificent monuments, smne of which being still in the naked, rough state, others cut, shaped and polished in most beautiful designs, of which the finish and workmanship throughout stify to the excellent ability of Mr. W. One monument of Governeur marble in particular, attracted greatly the attention of the reporter, being true- ly a work of art and bearing the in- scription of Mr. Wm. SUPREME SECRETARY'S REPORT. ‘ The report of the Supreme Secretary was an elaborate document, 31nd gave a detailed statement of all receipts and disbursements since the last meeting. Among the interesting information oh- tuined was the fact that since the (‘hi- tallied was the fact that since we \ iu- cago meeting two years ago, the num- ber of High Courts had increased from on t writ desu 21m ‘28, and the number of Subordin- “ ate Courts from 1,430 to 2,100, and the la membership from 50,847 to 80,765. During the past two ‘ years $101,118.00 had been paid in Sick and Funeral Benefits.,leaving the sur- plus to the credit 0' this department, on the let of July, $226,139.00. When it is remembered that four years ago this hind was in debt, the adequacy of the rates, and the etiicieney ot the manage- ment are apparent. The S. SUPREME rm‘sicux’s REPORT. Dr. Millman, Supreme Physiciam gave an exhaustive and interesting summary of the work in his department. It showed that, for the eighteen months ending December Blst, 1894, the num- ber of applications passed was 31,560, for insurance amounting to $39,169,000. 00. For the same period there had been rejected 3,073 applications, respecting insurance to the amount of 53,883,500. 00. The causes of rejection are given, H40] _' the principle ones being history of con- '3, n sumptinn, for which 613 were rejected, a and heart complications, for which 416 2 were rejected. Intemperauce was the cause of the rejection of 376. The average age 01 the member is only 34.82, as compared with 35.31 for 1803. The death rate has been remarkably low, ‘3 5.47 per 1.000. ' Ina sullemcntary statement giving: the result of the examinations for the first six months of 1895, it appears that 16,835 examination papers were reveiw~ ed, of which 15,179 were accepted, mak- ing a total for the two years, of 51,941 applications were received, of which 5,729 were rejected. The report of the Independent Forest- er, of which the Supreme Chief, Dr. Oronhytekha, is Editor-in chief, and Dan. A. Rose, busmess manager, was submitted. The Circulation has in- creased in the past four years threefold, from 32,000 to 100,000 per month, and the changes in the mailing list monthly are upwards of 5,000. The subject of the painting is a group of three newsboys “ shooting craps.” One lad has won the other’s plle while the third is keeping a sharp lookout for the “jigger.” A copy of the Evening News is lying on the ground. The attitudes of the lads are very natural and life. like and the expressions upon their faces, the one triumphant the other dowucast, the third expectant, are sp endidly portrayed. Mr. Sherwood has made a special study of newsboys and the painting shows well the mastery he has obtained. 'lhe treat- ment is broad and effective, the colorâ€" ing rich and the flow of lines easy. His reference to the ball being taken on the quiet and his signature as “ one who has played base ball ” shows that his moss-covered, clogged and hirsute- laden thinker lacks greatly ih authentic base ball rules. Our proposed game at the Forester’s ic-nic would have been withâ€"all “bona tide ” players of our team. We never squeal â€"-aloudâ€"-w hen beaten fairly. Why was there not some one to meet our team, and give them in- structions when they arrived? The substance of the whole affair seems that, Omemee’s mismanagement when subjected to public iHSpection was so disgustingly uncourteous that the “Fool” thought his only hope of up- holding the character of his ball tossers was in denying the facts published in the “ Post " of 12th ult. Our scribe, who wrote for the Post makes no pretensions to “ sling the' quill ” with literary writers, but he would be little pleased to place himself in the class of the “ Gondescending Fool ” who appears better to our citizens as a dehorniug person than a writer of good English. Perhaps his quid of tobacco slipped about the time he wrote that paragraph, ‘ and the result of rolling it back to ilB form er resting place, benuddled his grammatical construction. His rignature does him no injustice, ‘ but one would think that instead of his then “ condescending ” to the kingdom ofunwlse beings, he had been nursed frominl'ancy in it, and that he was a courageous soldier diserving o: a medal for having shown the public in his lemer how miserably low-minded, and foolish he was to rush into print. Our base ball boys are prepared to‘ prove anything that has been written on this dispute and for weeks we can write in reply to anything that may be deserving of it. ‘ We had concluded that six of our players could “ lambaste” the whole of the base ball bawlers in a game played according to rules‘laid down in Spuld- ing’s Base Bull Guide.
