It may also be said that these changes are not always for the better, but often bring retrogression and decay; and this is particularly true ofthe'circus of to-day. In fact, since the great ring-master. Death, gave Adam Forepaugh and P. T. BIGGEST 85 BEST SHOW ON EARTH “ Considering that you can get in the North-West Territories, where the land and climate are fully as good, free homesteads with much better conveni~ ences than the first settlers had here, get a. comfortable home and have the benefit of the rising in the value of the land. I cannotsee how you could de~ cide for Alabama, the State you men- tioned. “ Your afibstionate uncle, “JACOB Y. SHANTZ.” l " I have been through the Mennonite settlement, which was started eighteen or twenty years ago. Nearly all were poor and had to be helped with a large loan’of money which was all paid up seven years ago. Now they are very [prosperous]. l'hey have the best im- l proved implements, fine horses, large stables, and stocks of horses. cattle, etc., that surprise everybody. Unimproved prairie land in this locality sells at from $15 to $20 an acre. Then coming across the country thirty-four miles to Car- man, where I am now, it is mostly al: settled by Canadians. The crops and land are equally good, though settled only about fourteen years. This is a nice town, with a. school with five 3 teachers, five churches, and other ‘ thlngs in keeping. Unimproved prairie land around here is worth $12 to $20 per acre. I had it about the same through- out tlxe greater part of Manitoba. “In thinking over the matter I just wish you and Mr. Schaaf Would go through this country (Manitoba) and see the crops and the easy way of farming, all work done In about six months of the year; see the progress of the country, the rising of the value of land. Taking all things into consul- eration, I cannot see how you could decide in favour of Alabama. an old slave State. “The_ times A change and “ Dear Nephew,â€"~As trains go only twice a. week from here, I have to wait another day, so writing is somewhat of apastime. Itjust comes to my mind what you told me of Alabama. Taking for granted that all is true that you said you saw, in connection with what others told you which could not be seen at the time you were there, I still think there is need of caution. The raising of two or three crops in a. year on the same piece of land will certainlv take much attention and hard work the year round. ‘Rabing and shipping vegetables take close attention, and the watchinz of the market. Besides, this paying six or eight dollars per acre, stumps to be taken out, manure to be ‘ put on the land at the very start, is no smell angler-taking to face. Mr. Jacob Y. Mr. Fred McBain, who is not what you would calla jockey, yet very , fond of riding fractious horses, was comingr to town, as usual, for his mail. The horse he was rid- ing, on this particular occasion, was a spirited seven-year-old colt, of which he was very fond. While descending a steep hill, and in view of some female friends Fred ‘ endeavoured to show his skill as arider, but in the end he more properly displayed his tact as a mid-air gymnast. He very un~ wisely spurred his colt to its ut- most speed, and having passed his lady friends, he turned in his sad- dle, to see if they were still watch- ing him, when 10, his horse stumbled and described a com- plete somersault, hurling Fred,â€" 1who performed many gymnastic exercxses in mid airâ€"with fearful velocity for a distance of forty seven feet where he fell like afrog with. all fours spread, when picked up he was 'unconscious and had received a severe scalp wound which was bleeding profusely, be- sides having barely escaped hav- ing his left ear amputated. He. w conveyed to the reside “ [of 12:81.11:le Mr. M3: LOWes. ' a: 'l ,. Special to the Mirror : What May Prove a Fatal Accident. Inspector O’Leary must be in Winnipeg by Thursday, and will [cave town this evening or in the morning, but he .says he feels safe in leaving the case in the hands of Constable Short.â€"â€" Lind- say, Monday evening Post. Inspector O’Lcary and Con- stables-Short and Crawford de- serve credit for the clever way they have handled the affair and the secrecy with which their move- ments were conducted. The offence is such a serious one that the proof has to be of the most conclusive character, and the slightest wisper would have been fatal to their success. Murphy. sr., being an old man, and very ill, it was decided not to disturb him, but the other mem- bers were brought into town about 10 o’clock, and after a short ex- amination before County Magis- trate Deacon they Were remanded without bail and lodged in Castle Jackson for safe keeping. Acting under authority of the warrant with which they were provided the officers of the law then began a careful search of the premises, and were speedly re- warded by finding a ladle with some melted metal in the bottom, Several plaster moulds and other tools for turning out 25c. and IOC. pieces, and a number of coins in the unfinished and complete state, affording indubitable proof that the proper parties had been locat- ed. This morning about 2 o’clock Inspector O‘Leary and the two constables jumped into a rig in waiting at the Dominion Bank corner and started for the country to arrest the suspected parties. The roads were in a bad condition after the heavy shower that tell an hour previous, but they made fast time, and in about an hour and a half from the time of departure they pulled up within a short dis- tance of a house occupied by a ‘ family named Murphy, on the township line between Emily and Manvers, about a mile from Mount Horcb. A little after day-light they approached the house and demanded admission, which was refused, but the door was insecure- ly fastened and yielded readily to alittle pressure. They then ar- rested the occupantSMVVellington Murphy, Allan Murphy, and Lillie Murphy; \Villiam Murphy, whom r they was very anxious to secure, was not present. but soon after he came in from the barn and threat- ened to paralyze all hands, but aftera show of force he quietly submitted to Constable Short and allowed himself to be handcuffed. For some weeks past our mer- chants and bankers have been meeting with considerable quanti- ties of spurious silver coin of 25c. and IOC. denominations, and a suspicion that it was being made in the vicinity ofthe town became almost a certainty owing to quiet investigations conducted by County Constable Short and Craw- ford. The Ottawa authorities were then commuicated with, and on Friday last Inspector O’Leary, whose special misson is to ferret out counterfeiters, arrived from the capital and registered at the Simpson house under the innocent name of Smith, posing as a com- mercial man. Next morning he went to work with a will, and taking up the threads of evidence already in thepossession of Con- stables Short and Crawford he followed them up so skilfully that yesterday they felt they had locat- ed the guilty parties.
