Never in its history has Toronto been thronged with so many people as the gn), jolly and good natured crowti which collected from all parts of the Dominion, anxious to do honor to the future King of the great Empire of which we have the proud privilege of forming a part. . The proceedings commenced on i the afternoon oi the 10th inst,j when the royal pair arrived at a temporary station erect ed on Dupont St. North Toronto. Here they were met and welcomed by Premier Ross, Inspector Hughes and others, and were treated to a patriotic chorus by thousands of Toronto's school children eager to get a glimpse of Their High- nesses and pay their homage. The whole mute of the processiori to the City Hall was lined on either side by H is Majesty’s Loyal Soldiers, who assisted the police in keeping back the eager throngs who crowded the'streets. At the City {all the Mayor read the civic address of welcome while a chorus of fifteen hundred adult voices xnder Prof. Torriugton ‘ rendered several patriotic songs‘ to the great delight of the royal party and the thousands of spec- tators. Addresses were also read from prominent societies and corporations throughout Ontario. The royal party then repaired to Government house for dinner and in the evening attended a grand concert in Massey Hall. But Friday was the gala day. Long before the exhibit i o n grounds Were Opened crowds were waitmgz tor admission and before the time for the.c0mmencement of the Royal Reyiew upwards of twenty thousand people occupied L seats and other places of vantage. ; H. R H.and the DJChSSS entered l the grounds by different gates and l e a c h received. a tremendous | ovation on entering. After impacting the several regiments of Infantry and the Cavalry and Artillery Corps mob- ilized on Garrison Common the Duke took up his position on a‘ stand erected for the occalion in front of the grand stand and pro- ceeded with the presentation 01 medals to the herOes of the Boer“ War. Upwards of six hundred Southi‘xfricun Veterans received this coveted decoration from the hands of their future King while the Duchess looked smilingly and approvingly on an d rounds of applause greeted the soldiers. The presentation ofdeeorations was concluded about 2 o'clock when His Royal Highness mount- ed his grey charger and took up his position near the saluting pom! and then commenced a “march past” of Canada’s citizen soldiers in which about eleven thousand of our country‘s defenders took part. First came th e Cavalry Br:gade followed by the Artillery division while the several city and ruralregiments ot'mfantrvbrought up the rear. The several military hands were stationed on the com- mon close by and as each struck up the music when its own regi- ment appeared and played it past the effect was most pleasing as well as inspiring. Great satisfaction and enthus. iasm was manifested by the spec- tators at the fine department and soldierly appearance of the men as regiment after regiment passed the saluting point and more grati- fying than all was the pleasure so plainly expressed by HIS Royal Highness. In this march past our Canadian'Militia showed our citi. zens that it can comparewith that of other countries just as favorable on parade as it has during the late war‘when it has taken its place bestde th e best Imperial regi- ments. ,. At the conclusion of the review the Duke and Duchess both .ex- pressed the greatest admiration of "Our Soldier Boys." In the evening a royal reception was held at the Governm e n t Buildings where Their R o y a] Highnesses mot and shook hands with more than three thousand Canadiane On the foliow i n g morning the royal pair and party left for Niagara after a g a i n expressing feelings of gratification at the hearty welcome given by the citizens of Toronto and sur- rounding country. > Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York.
