Laurier has apparently decided to help the Liberal candidate in North Ontario by staying away from all of the campaign meetings. His rank as a statesman cannot therefore be disputed. ‘l'l-‘l‘ Those Liberal papers which have been trying to make out that Sir Mackenzie Bowell does not lie upon a couch of roses have neglected so far to mention that he sleeps on a bed of Thistles. But the Thistles referred to are excellent citizens of Ottawa. who, being in Eur- ope, have rented the Premier their com. fox-table remdence during their absence. 7 “ll-T Cunning, rather than principle, seems to be the chief stock-in-trade of the Lib’ eral machine. The Winnipeg Tribune, the party journal in the West, has just published an article saying that under no circumstances will Mr. Greenway listen to the complaints of the Manitoba minority. The Toronto Globe has been printing articles declaring that Ottawa must not do anything, for the iourth bill of rights is a fraud, the judgment of the Judicial Committee means nothing, and “ coercion " would be wronw. Now comes the Brantford Expositor with an appeal to Archbishop Cleary, “He would do the cause of the Manitoba Catholics a roalrand valuable service,†says the Expositor, “ if he would endorse Mr. i Laurier’s demand for an enquiry into the facts of the case." So that oppon- ents of action are to believe that neither Mr. Greenway nor Mr. Laurier willgive i consideration to the complaints, while l those who hold that there is a. grievance are to assume that both gentlemen will hasten to act after a commission has re- ported. The whole thing looks like a | conï¬dence gsme."â€"Mail and Empire. Mr. H. Druitt, of New York, who has been spending a few weeks vacation here, has returned to that city. On Monday evening, Dec. 2nd., 3. Fowl Supper was given at the Middle Road Methodist Church, and notwithstanding the inclem- encv of the weather, the church was ï¬lled to its upmost capacity: The Rev. S. J. Shorey, of Lind- say, gave an interesting and in- structive address on “ Manhoodâ€. Mr. Shorey spoke for over one hour and when he sat down the only complaint was that he had ï¬nished too soon. The youngl men of Middle Road will never forget the soul stirring words of that evening, and will endeavor to proï¬t thereby. Quite late in the evening Rev. N. Hill appeared, having driven to Middle Road after his meeting at Lebanon. He addressed the audience fora few minutes in his usual happy style. The music furnished was of a very high order. Three quartetts were rendered by Mrs. T. C. Ivory, Mrs. (Rev.) J. M. Garbutt, Dr. W'aldon and Mr. T. j. Par- sons, accompanied by Miss \Vil- liamson.
