True Vine†Sunday Resurrection and the There ’s a legend about Moses that once while he was keeping Jethro’s sheep, one wandered away. Moses followed and found it drinking at a mc untain stream. He'said “It was be- ca'use .you were thirsty you wandered away†and he picked it up in his arms and carried it home. God thought that since Moses was so compassionate to a stray sheep he was the man to lead His people. They need- ed a shepherd [to lead them to the promised land. Jesus was compassionate to the multitude, weighed down by care and sorrow. He was moved to the depths of his heart because he saw them as sheep without a shepherd, un- .cared for unsheph'erded. They haunted him, «lid his pity was the driving force {which led the good shepherd to give his life for them. Were It not for Jesus we too would be lost, fearful, unsatisï¬ed. Like sheep without a shepherd we could not find our way. We should be like lost children in the rain. Life at times is so be- wildering we stand at the cross- roads not knowng which way to take. Only by following Jesus can we find the right way. Without the good shep- herd we cannot find the pas-- ture for sustenance. We need inspiration which we cannot. find elsewhere. St. Augustine said “Thou made us for Thy- self. and our hearts are restless until we find rest in Theeâ€. “'ithout the shepherd the sheep have no defence against the robber or wild beast. We cannot live our life. alone. No one can keep us from the In the holy land in Jesus’ lifetime, the picture of the sheep with the little lambs gamboling on the hillsde was a common one. There was al- ways a shepherd with them, leading his flock, sometimes carrying a lamb in his arms, protecting them alvays from danger. He not only pro- tected them from wild animals, but he led them to pasture. so they were dependent on him for susteg‘itance as well as for safety. ‘The shepherd knew his flock by name and between him and his sheep was a beauti- ful understanding. The shep- herd must be kind, noble. cour- ageous true, to protect and to guide his sheep. Perhaps as Jesus called himself the good shepherd of his peOple a real shepherd With his flock could be seen on the hillside above 'them . u“ I .
