Residence: Ba-ilieboro 30 Office: Millbrook 87W mm NEED OF THE WEEK CYPRESS SPURGE ‘ , This weed is at times also called. “Graveyard Weed due tot having been plan-ted as a flower in cemeteries and left unattend ed it has spread to roadsides and adjoining f ields. In parts of Ontario it is called also Braeside weed, and the local history states that it was introduced by early settlers from Europe as a special garden plant. It spread «to rough land when the forest growth was «removed. Many present infestations came from the use of grovel and fill, taken Ifrom gravelâ€"pits to road sides and used as fillfor new construction. Cypress Sp'urge belongs to the same family as Leafy Spurge but it rarely grows more than 10 inshes in height. The stems are in dense clusters with many slender, greenish-blue leaves. rlithe top is flat and has many flowers. It spreads from seed and numeroUs underground rootstal-ks, states the Field Crops Branch; of the Ontario Department of Agriculture. . This weed blossoms very early in June, and seed is listed» iuted from then until November. Due to «the fact that very little other vegetation will persist in the same location, Cypress Spur; Ege will take over from its seed and extensive root system. Our first recommendation must be a warning that Cypress 'Spurge should never be used as a border plant in gardens or otherwise. Repeated close cutting to stop seed setting will help to control its spread. Small patches: can be grubbed out, and it is seldom found in cultivated fields where a short rotation is prâ€" actised. Repeated use of Brushâ€"kill at from 16 to 32 ounces per acre will help in the control, but it will reappear if these infes "Lation-s are not resprayed frequently. , This plant is considered objectionable to cattle, and they rarely pasture spots that are infested. Soil sterilation has been tried but the cost factor is prohibitive in many cases in lighter soils where it is usually found. Small patches must ‘I‘eceive im- mediate attentlon. as this weed cannot be left to spread. I t l ____________________________.__..â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€" We are pledged .to fight if Berlin is attackedâ€"all the NATO partners are sworn to treat an attack upon one as an attack on all, and West Berlin is part of that alliance. But we are not pledged to fight for any other interest of German foreign poli- cy, and specifically not to protect West Germany from the nec- iessity of taking some unpalatable steps. Some such steps are inevitable. It has been obvious for years that as soon as th-rushchov felt 'he could trust the East German Communist puppets to maintain their hold on the counâ€" ' try, he would draw back and leave the West no alternative but , to recognize them. He has now been proclaiming, for about three years, his intention of doing so immediately. At last, apparently, the means it. There is nothing the West can do to prevent this. It’s not what we want, but it’s what we’ve got. To call it a pretext for i nuclear war is madness. â€"â€"BLA~IR FRASER :w-‘~«::~s;:e»¢¢5¢wmfl .ri'r -. .- .
