A striking feature of the unique cxhibtion of clothing held at; the Madison Square Garden (writes The London Chronicle 5 New York cor- respondent), was the large number of women exhibitors representing factories which as the result of their enterprise have sprung up all over the country within the last few years. These women have in no case been engaged in the manufacture of women’s clothing more than three or four years. The story of their success reads like a fairy tale. One of themâ€"the daughter of Eng- lish parentsâ€"was left some ten years ago with several small bro- thers and sisters to support. She entered the business house of Mar- nnall Field in Chicago, and three years afterwards found herself es- tablished in Paris as their buyer for ladies’ underclothing. Three years ago she decided to manufacture in her own behalf. She began with twenty workwomen. Now she employs 600, in addition to nearly a hundred agents travel- ing in every part of the world. Miss Leona Forster, who has built up this enterprise, is still in the early thirties. She is petite and as dainty as a rosebud. She wears Parisian gowns exquisitely cut} and of charming simplicity: $119 tells me that by living rationally and dressing comfortably she ï¬nds her- self able to spend the day in her factory from 7 a.m. until 3 pm in summer and from 8 1'?“- gntil 5 p.m. {I} the winter. Miss Forster explained that her §ncccss was due 1:) her entlre devotlon to her busi- HESS. “English girls,†she declared, “of the better class make their bu- siness a. subsidiary matter to their social success. So many of them, pouring out by the hundred from schools and colleges every year, are seeking some genteel occupa- tion which will leave them free, to play tennis and attend unlimited numbers of afternoon teas. If these troubles are neglected they result “ 7 Ana-Al UUuULuo any M-O-_--~ -. in complete nervous collapse and possibly paralysis. Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills have won a great repu- tation by curing all forms of nerv- ous disease. The nervous system‘ depends entirely upon the blood supply for nourishment; when the blood is thin and weak the nerves are affected as described. Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills actually inâ€" crease the supply of good red blood, feed, strengthen and tone the nerves, enable them to perform their functions and dispel all signs of a breakdown. Mrs. Jas. H. Ward, Lord’s Cove, \ B., says: “About two years ago I suffered so much from nervous prostration that I was little better than a helpless wreck. I suffered from headaches and a constant feel- ing of dizziness. The least unusual move would startle me and set my heart palpitating violently. I had little or no appetite, and grew so weak that I was hardly able to drag myself about, and could not do my housework. In every way I was in a deplorable condition. As the me- ‘dicine I had been taking seemed to 1do me no good, my husband got a supply of Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills. I had only been taking the Pills for a couple of weeks, when I seem- ed to feel somewhat better, and this encouraged me to continue the treatment. From an article in a Danzig news- paper, quoted by The Navy, on the recent, Baltic cruise of the Brit- ish armored cruiser Cornwall, it appears that fears as to the bot- tling up of fleets are not entirely conï¬ned to English writers on the Germans. vx .u....... The journal reports that. on the occasion of the Cornwall’s visit to Kiel, a. dense mist- prevailed, and â€the harbor authorities, who had been advised of: her pending ar- riva-l in the evening, did not ex- pect her to put in an appearance before morning. However, when day broke. there she was, moored at her assigned po- sition, and appearing to be quite at home. She had navigated the difficult. Kiel ford in the darkness and mist without a pilot on board. This performance she repeated at Danzig and Swinemunde, accord- ing to the report, in both places without a pilot. “From this performance.†says the journal “we are compelled to ask what would happen 1n the ev ent of a. sudden outbreak of war with England. They would not have theg slightest difï¬culty in bottling up theg high seas fleet in Kiel or elsewhere.†Refusal to Live After the Death of ‘ Their Mates. M. SUICIDE 0F WHALES. SAVED lN HIS OLD AGE. W. II. PIERCE of Strange Penalties for Breach of Promise. From the plaintiff’s point of view. England is the best country 0“ eqrth for breach of promise actions. Any girl who can bring evidenc'e that her affections have been serl' ously trifled with will be almost certain to receive substantial daJH' agcs from a. sympathetic Enghsh jury. In certain parts of the United States breach of promise actions are not allowed to be brought in- to court, and the man is at liberty to become engaged and disengaged to as many maidens as he pleases. In other parts of the States, how- ever, huge damages are sometimes awarded on very slight evidence. In Germany a special law has been framed which has completely abolished breach of promise 110‘ tions. Should a young couple dc- sire to become engaged, they “5}†the town hall and declare the“ willingness to marry, and $18“! with witnesses, a series of docu- ments which render a change "Jf mind on the man’s part practical y out of the question. They are not engaged until this formality 08" been carried out. Should either party discover that they have made a mistake and whh to withdraw from this agreemem, the pair again visit the town hall. and another series of documents are formally signed. witnessed‘ un’l sealed. The authorities then deter mine the question of compensation for injured feelings. In France breach of promise ac- tions are extremely few. Th? French law requires the plaintllf t< prove in court, that she has 51" fared pecuniary loss by her ï¬ance s ï¬cklenoss. Throughout France a bride almost invariably has a mar riage dob, large or small, and the fact is likely to weaken her case' The same law has been adopt03 in Austria, and Holland, whore tr‘c number of such cases is small. In most of the Continental cities the parties concerned take the law 19' to their own hands and got thelr big brothers or muscular friends to administer a severe thrashing, to any ï¬ckle man who breaks his prpmise to marry. . - . .11 ,J .. v....uu . Still another rhethod is followed :11 Italy. The law requires the per- son suing for breach of promise, of whichever sex, to produce a writ- ten promise to marry from the (le- fendant, otherwise the case is in- stantly thrown out of court. The «difï¬culty of producing such evi- dence is. of course, practically in- surmountable. and cases are rarely tried.
