The work will take some time to complete, but will greatly facilitate the movement of steamboats and other craft on these waters. ‘ ‘ Work has been begun on the new slide. A large pier is being built above the slide in order to shut off the flow of water, and as soon "as this is completed work will be begun on the slide proper. \ The foundation for the new resi- dence of our lock-master is rapidly nearly completion. No doubt this will be one of the most upâ€"toâ€"date dwellings in our village, and situated as it will be on the bank of the canal, will add very materially to the ap- pearance of the waterfront. soon as possible, though on account ’of the greater expenditure in connec- 'tion With the laying of these walks only a limited amount can be done at present. A good deal of excite- ment was caused among the residents of ‘Oak-st. when it became known that it was necessary to cut down a couple of large oak trees on the street. At first the Commissioners thought it would be possible‘to spare the trees, but as the work progressed it was found out that in order to have the walks satisfactorily laid ‘it would be necessary to remove them. As a rule trees on the streets of our village should be carefully guarded, but there i are exceptions to almost every rule,‘ and this seems to have been a time when it was necessary to make the exception. __‘._'-_ mm . - â€" -c J When the new cement walk which is being laid on Oak-st. is finished it will add greatly to the appearance or our village.
