NR The importance of the agricultural, interests of this province are supreme ‘ among the industries in their vital bearing on the lite and prosperity of the people, and the question natur- ally suggests itself why- is there not more attention paid to this outstand- ing industry. It’s one of Professor Za- vitz’s favorite sayings that “The value 'Of our agricultural products is seven times greater than our forests ,eight times greater than that of our mines, and nineteen times greater than that of our ï¬sheries. Mr. C. C. Jones Dep; uty Minister of Agriculture, said, in a recent address, that if the farmers of our province would adopt up-to-date methods, it would be possible to in- crease our agricultural products ï¬fty per cent.†How to Increase the Output. How can the desirable end suggest- 3ed by Mr. James be reached? One of the best methods of securing this de- sirable increase is by. improved meth- ods, and improved methods naturally require improved knowledge. The lat- ter requires improved education, and for the citizens of Victoria County there is a splendid opportunity given in the Five Days’ Free Stock and Seed Judging Course in Lindsay on January 26th to 30th, inclusive. It is also interesting to note that these dates include another eventâ€" The Poultry and Pet Stock Show herehwhich should undoubtedly be of most material interest and proï¬t to farmers. The free course offered this year by the Lindsay branch of the Ontario De- partment of Agricukure may be sum- med up as follows: Seed Judging. From 8.30 to 10 am. of each day will be spent in the study of the seeds of our various farm crops. Each person will be given samples and will he taught how to judge wheat, oats, peas, barley, and grass and clover seeds. Lectures will be given on the varie- ties best adapted for use in this dis- trict, on methods of cultivation, clean- ing and testing seed, and on the im- provement of seed by selection. This course will be conducted by Professor C. A. Zavitz, of the Ontario Agricul- JANBARY zen-c TO awnâ€"FIVE PROFITABLE DAYS FOR FAnueas AND FARMERS’ SONSâ€"PROFE ssons zAVITZ. DAY. FLET- CHER. The Feenlon Falls Gazette last week, publishes the following, which will be of interest, as it relates to the case between Mr. F. J. Goodman, of Rosedale, and Mr. J. Parkin, of Lind- say, and the Fenelon Township Coun- cil relative to the mine at Rosedale. The case has previously been review- ed in these columns: . The clerk of Fenelon township sends us this week a report of the minutes of the special meeting of the Fenelon Council, held on August alst, which is the soâ€"called secret meeting referred» to in Mr. F. J. Goodman’s recent let- ters in the Gazette, and the minutes of which were not published at the time. Here they are: m The Council met to hear the report of Councillor Palmer and J. B. Lectures upon unsoundness in horses and umhe common diseases of farm animals will be given by a veterinarian. Evening Lectures. ‘ In the evenings lectures will be giv- en by the professors in charge of the course, by Dr. Fletcher of the Domin- ion Experimental Farm, Ottawa, and by Dr. Falconer, President of Toron- to University. In order to take full adyantage of the course ,arrange to spend the whole ï¬ve days in Lindsay. This course has been specially plan- ned for farmers’ sons. who are desir- ous of learning some of the underly- ing principles of agriculture. and in- cludes lectures on stock breeding and feeding, rotation of crops, selection of seed, cultivation of soil, underdrain- age, weeds and weed seeds, and dairy- ing. These subjects will be treated in a simple, practical manner, and those taking advantage of this course may rest assured that they will be amply repaid for the time and money invested. The prosperity of our country de- pends on the farmer, and, as in trades the skilled man produces the most and the best, so the farmer, who stud- ies to know the why and wherefore of his farm Operations, will in time reach the top in farm productions. n; Burnt River Telephone Co.
