Mr. Roenlgk was called upon to make a statement, and he said that a number of the instruments belong ed to the members, and others were the property of the citizens, although they were bought by the hand. Ten dollars a month rental was paid for the hall, and it was necessary to have private quarters, as it would be unsafe to leave music, instruments, etc., in a public hall. The expenses Lfor heat and light amounted to about $20 and Mr. Roenigk's salary was $400. In excess of what the town gives the citizens made up from $200 to $300 by subscriptions. In reply to a question from the Mayor Mr. Roenigk said it was im- possible to give a concert or two in the winter. The members of the band were paid nothing for playing in the park and the band made nothing in playing on engagements, etc. Before Hr. Roenigk was appointed Mr. Gray was hand master at a salary of $500 a year. The Council ran the band and it cost the town $800 and then it bad no band. Barrie had been without a band, and now the Council of that town was asked to give a grant of $700. What the local band got in January went into the Treasury. Ex-Mayor James Begg- said when he was in the Council he always endeav- oured to economize but, in connection with grant to the band. He felt that it was money well spent. In fact, he felt th" organization was deserving of more liberal assistance, and he urged the present Council to grant the request made by the band, and vote them the grant. ' Mr. Richard Sylvester also .urged the speedy vote of the grant as a number of new players were anxious to secure positions, and the band would be able to proceed more satis- 1actorily if the grant were made. The measure of what we love and admire is the measure of your own worth. The question will be dealt with by the Finance Committee - Regarding the band concerts in the winter, it was impossible to get a hall suitable for this purpose. Mr. Roenigk said. on the town roll. the result being that arrears of taxes to the said am- ount with interest are charged agâ€" ainst him in the land book.
