Miss Mary and Jessie Forrest of Tor onto are enjoying their holidays with friends here. Miss Laura McCorvie has returned to Toronto after visiting at her home here. Mr. Bert Parliament had the mis- fortune to lose a Valuable cow last week. It was a remarkable thing that dur- ing the long period from 1760 e01911 not one of these lairds or Brownlee had any family. The first. the entailer was married, but had no family, and there neVer h-‘.d leen an heir since, There was a slight touch of rovrnance about the marriage of Elizabeth Har- vie, another daughter of the Rev John Harvie, of Innerwick. A young- doctor named Thomas Robertson, (great I grandfather of Mr. A. Robertson, of ,Lindsay), had at the Precocious age i of 19, received an appointment as nav al surgeon, and before he went away {to take up his duties he went to see .the Parish Minister at Innerwick. In a 1 :corner of the room an infant was ly- 1 ing, in a cradle, and the young man rocked it to sleep. Some teasing fol- lowed, and the Minister’s wife jocu- larly remarked that he might marry the child. Nineteen years later the remark came true, and he married the child, whom, as an infant he had rocked in the cradle. This Thomas Robertson saw much service during .the Napoleonic War; be practically founded the Hospital ship as a feat- ure or NaVal organization. He died at the age of 77 and his eldest son was Admiral Robert RObinson, Mr. Robertson's (LindsaY) , grandfather. This man devoted his life to the naVy and straw the time of the first intro. duction of steam into the navy, he may he said to have been identified with steam pioneering work. He was lieutenant of the Rattler, the first steam war vessel, and saw 47 years.’ service in the navy. He was succeeded by his son, Thomas Robertson, broth- er-in-law of Mr. Robertson, Lindsay. BROWN’ S-MARIPOSA. (Special to The Post)‘ Mrs. Walter Arksey and children 0! Lindsay spent a few days last week with her mother, Mrs. A. Brown. The present laird of Brownlee' has also recently succeeded to an estate near Woolwich. NEPHEW 0F MR. A. ROBERTSON HONORED 3;: IN SCOTLAND ON COMING OF NOR Councillor D. Buchan, a warm friend of the family. in proposing the health of Robert Robertson-Shersby- Harvie, gave a most interesting his- tory of the estate of Brownlee and its various proprietors. I Mr. Robert Robertson-Shersby-H-ar- 'vie is the new laird of the Brownlee jHoua and estate. He was educated at jBediord Grammar school, and at the Caius College, Cambridge, where he is qualifying for the English bar. His family has a most notable history, as he had been called upon in the thresh- hold of manhood to take up a mos-t important estate, in which his prede- cessors have, in three generat-ioos, spanned 150 years of possession with 1 blameless lives. l The affair was held at Brownlee House, and the large company present represented three districts. The pro- ceedings took the form of a garden party, and a toast list‘was enthusias- tiCally carried out, which was inter: spersed with music, and at the close“ dancing was indulged in. I A recent msue of the Carluke and Lanark (England) Gazette, contains a. lengthy a¢count of an interesting function in connect-ion with the com- ing of age of Robert Robertson-Shears- by-Harvie, of Bro'wnlee. anephew of Mr. A. Robertson, of Lindsay. LINDSAY. ONTARIO, FRIDAY.
