M I Mr. Hawkins said complaints were _’ ’made regarding peddlers and hue]:- â€o sters going through the county. In Lorneville recently there were ï¬ve and has added peddlers there in one day. The con- stable’s attention was drawn to the matter but he took no action, claim- lh world wide in: that there was nothing in it for 1 .IA COUNTY COUNCIL (.Continued from page 10) library. and would be there for all time. It was an absolute necessity The fact that the law association paid tor the telephone in the judges' chambers was also cited. The speaker felt that the council should not only restore the grant, but increase it. The law association was only too well pleased to allow the conneil to use their quarters, and was also pleased that a friendly relation ex- isted between the two bodies. Mr. T. Stewart said that the coun« cil readily gave grants to other lib- raries ‘in the county. and none was more deserving than the law library. The council should not only give a grant. but also pay for telephone. The library is for the use 0! the ol- ï¬cials o! the county and the judges Mr. R. J. McLaughlin, K.C.. said books were not in the library con- taining the facts desired. a search was made in Toronto, which necessi- tated expense. The library was a county one, and the council should feel proud of it and support it. Mr. McDiarmid also spoke briefly, and urged upon the council the nec- essity 0! making the grant. The chairmanâ€"I assure you, gon- tleman. the matter will receive ‘ our very serious consideration when tak- en up by the committee. The deputation then withdrew. In connection with this matter. Messrs. Campbell and Eyres moved Lindsay Law Library. GRANTS. On motion of Messrs. Fielding and Young the warden was granted an allowance of $200. Mr. McNeillieâ€"It the constable proâ€" secutes he will get practically hall of the ï¬ne. Mr. Jordan cited an instance at North Star, where the pedlars were going through the county doing as they pleased. The public interests should be protected. Mr. McNeillieâ€"The law gives a con- stable the power to arrest him. Several of the councillors referred at length to this matter, and Mr.‘ Jordan's motion carried, which re? commended that the clause passed in connection with licenses in. June, 1907, ehould not prevent an oflicial's discretion in the matter, and that county constables be notiï¬ed. WHO PAYS THE PIPER ? An account was read from the Lindsay Sanitorium amounting to the sum of $12.50, re the mainten- ance for ï¬ve weeks of an unfortun- unfortunate woman who workbd in a hotel, and was about to be conï¬ned. Mr. Eyres said the case should re- ceive humane treatment, and all con- cerned should try and elect a settle- ment. He felt the town would be prepared to bear its share of the cost. After considerable discussion and the introducing of amendments to the amendment the amendment was vot- aa m and lost. and the motion car- ed on and lost, tied. A statement of account in connec- tion with the agricultural classes at the collegiate institute was read, and showed an expenditure of $4,783, which was within $100 of the amount mud by the county council for '1}: F: H. The chairman reierred to the suc- cess of the work carried on by Mr. Reed, and stated that he had always given it his most hearty support. it the government had done nothing else than make make appointments of this nature. they were deserving 0! all credit. The work was eminently successful in Victoria county, and in closing the speaker referred in up- preciative terms to the system oi drainage carried out by Mr. Reed at the house of refuge. Mr. Reed next spoke on the drain- age location and the work that had been done in connection therewith. When completed it will make a stumpy ï¬eld into one of the best ï¬elds on the farm. There was a dif- ference, he said, between the estimate of grant and the expenditure. They did not build a tool house, as con- templated, or purchase tools. More land would be required in the future for experimean work. On motion of Mr. Mitchell, the account in connec- tion with the agricultural classes was ordered to be paid. Mr. Graham said it was with mingled sentiments of sorrow and re- gret that he rose to move a vote of thanks to Mr. Reed for his valuable services to the county during his two years’ residence mere.
