The news of the sudden death came, as a great shock to his many friends and associates. Apoplexy was the cause. The statement given by the omcials of the Imperial Bank; of which the late Mr. Wilkle was presi- dent, was: “Mr. Wilkie died at ".11 o'clock at his house on Sherbourne street of apoplexy." Two sons survive. They are both captains in the regular armyâ€"Arthur and Stewart. The late colonel was born in Que- bec on Dec. 17, 1846. He entered the service of the Quebec Bank in 1862. and was promoted to the position of accountant of the Montreal branch in 1867. The same year he went to St. Catharines as local manager. In 1872 he was promoted to (Toronto as man- ager. and held this position until‘he was appointed cashier of the newly- organized Imperial Bank. At the-time of his death Col. Wilkie was president of the Imperial Bank. Col. Wilkie was also active in artistic and liter- ary movements. Marita has always been on the borâ€"l der-line of treason, and he has had good cause to remember “K. ” When Cronje surrendered and there was a lull in afiairs, Kitchener had time. to devote his attention yo growing rebellion which had broken out in the. very district in which Marita was commanding when he broke faith with the King. Kitchener had an un- igentle method of dealing with treat son, and Maritz hastily decamped before the vengeful columns that came sweeping up to Priesk. After the war was over every effort was made to conciliate the Dutch in that district. and Maritz, (me of the 1331; men to take the oath of allegiance, was given control of the military forces in that part of the world. The failure of the kid-glove method with such men as Maritz is apparent.
