Mr. Editor. it you willpall‘ow me space inhyour valu- able paper. in reply to an article which appeared in your issue of the 88th inst. re the Maunder appeal. The facts on the case are as follows: On the 30th of July. 1904, it came to my notice that there had been a tight in the Maunder hotel durins the night previous. After making some enquiries regarding the mat- ter I laid an information against the parties connected; with it for welt. John T. Maunder .being one of the participants, for which he was fined $10 and costs, a total of 14.70 (not 81 as stated in the Town Soiicitor’s let- ter and in the article). Mr. Mann- der appealed against the Magistrate’s judgment, but when the appeal came up for trial betore his Honor. the late Judge Dean. Mr. G. R. Hopkins point- ed out to the Court that the bond ,given by Mr. Mannder was not pro- perly drawn, and the judge reserved judgment in the matter. It was ex- pected that the case would come up again at the next sittings of the Court. and in the meantime the ap- pellant allowed the ease to dgop. leaving the conviction still standing against John T. Maunder It is ‘ very necessary that appeals should be defended, as we have on an average eighteen cases each month during the year in the police court. ninety per< fint. of them being laid by myselt as chief constable of. the town, It will readily be seen that it we allow any appeals to go by default we would soon have plenty. of them on our hands. ~ It is of the greatest "lotto NOV Ontario to have it: tronum Infu- tinted and advertised by a; writer at Mr. Corpontor'o reputation. o und- iooto Journalistic correspondent 0! solid repute. poms-ins. us he do". the entry into the vary but Mo- popora on the continent.
