FIRE IN FENELON FALLS
Last night Mr. John D. Smith's residence on Bond street, in this village, was totally destroyed by fire, which broke out a little before 10 o'clock in the corner of the woodshed where the kindlings were kept, and the cause of which is entirely unknown. All the family were in bed and asleep at the time, and Mr. Smith's eldest son was the first to awake and give the alarm. The fire was seen by neighbours almost as soon as it started, and a considerable number of persons were quickly on the spot, but could do nothing except take out the contents of the building, as the well and cistern were both in the woodshed and surrounded by flames. The engines were promptly got out and water drawn on waggons as soon as possible ; but not until too late to be of any service. The house, which was the best in the village, was built about twelve years ago and cost nearly or quit $2,500 ; it was insured for $1,200. All the furniture except some of the kitchen was saved, though much of it was badly damaged in removal; but the loss on it is fully covered by insurance.
