LIVELY WORK.--On Wednesday of last week a friendly contest took place on lot No. 18 in the 3rd concession of Verulam between Mr. Wm. Martin, the owner of the farm, and Messrs. Robert Martin and John Junkin, of the same township, and Mr. Richard Steele, of Somerville. Mr. Wm. Martin has a Royal Royce Reaper, and the other three men engaged to bind the oats off an eight-acre field as fast as they could be cut by the machine, which Mr. Martin thought they could not do if he drove the reaper. The contest commenced at 1.30 p.m., and continued without any stoppage for just five hours, when the field was finished, and the result was that Mr. Martin had to "give in beat," as he had not been able to leave a single sheaf behind. It was lively work for both horses and men, as the oats stood four and a half feet high, and the field contained four hundred stooks, large bind.
