PublicBuildings_Panels COBOURG'S NEWER PUBLIC BUILDINGS TRADITION CONTINUING THE NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY BUILDING Look at these two pictures of the Newcastle District Headquarters building (1828-1934) and the current County Headquarters completed in 2007. Erected at the same location, they provide a startling contrast between the classic architectural style for which Cobourg has become known, and the modern style in which it is finding a new pride. Note the similarities as well as the dierences! The striking use of Douglas fir posts in the exterior walkway of the new building is continued throughout the interior in the Council Chambers and the open concept oce areas. Energy eciency is prioritized through the use of a geothermal heat pump system reaching 300 feet down. COBOURG COMMUNITY CENTRE Recreational facilities have played an important part in the life of Cobourg and its residents over the years. They have included a slide at the beach, clubhouses for golf and bowling, arenas for hockey and curling, tennis courts, swimming pools, ball diamonds, soccer fields and the YMCA The prominence of hockey, the growing population and the need for extra activity space led to a push for a new state of the art community centre. Funding was provided in large part from the Federal and Provincial coers and the new CCC opened in 2011. The building which emerged has a 2,000 seat multi-purpose event centre which accommodates an NHL size ice pad, a 400 seat NHL size community ice pad, a double gymnasium, several multi-use rooms, dedicated seniors and youth centre, a child minding centre, and community user group oce space. Plans had been considered to include a swimming pool. Perhaps that is for the future.
