A QUEER BIRD.--A short time ago Mr. Thos. Lockhart, while mowing a field of grass on Mr. J. H. Brandon's farm in Verulam, found a young bittern, which had strayed from a nest somewhere in the vicinity. As it was not old enough to fly, and one of its legs had been hurt by the machine, he took it home, and on Saturday last brought it to the Falls and gave it to Mr. Pearce, in whose shop window it has since been on exhibition. It is a queer looking bird about as large as a pigeon, with a very long neck and a terrible bill able to nip a piece out of a finger incautiously placed within its reach. Its favorite food is frogs, which the boys catch for the fun of seeing it swallow them, and it will also bolt mice, alive or dead; but it will have to learn to eat something else before winter, if it lives till then.
