- Description
- Service agencies and police said domestic violence calls were down, but worried it was simply a 'powder keg' as women in need were self-isolated or unable to get time away from abusers in order to call crisis counsellors or police for help due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The calls that did come in seemed to indicate increased or escalated violence.
Federal and provincial funding to shelters was insufficient to cover COVID-19 financial costs and many spring and summer fundraisers were forced to be cancelled.
