Description
The City of Kawartha Lakes compiled a Canada Day celebratory video message during the COVID-19 pandemic featuring temporary art installations in collaboration with the Kawartha Art Gallery and the Kawartha Art Network, messages from front-line city services (Fire Rescue, Police Service, Paramedic Service, and OPP) and photo contributions from city residents.

The city offered up a limited supply of free Canada Day decoration kits to encourage residents to dress up their homes and share photos to celebrate Canada Day using #KawarthaLakesStrong

Due to COVID-19, traditional community Canada Day celebrations of food, fun and fireworks in all Kawartha Lakes communities were cancelled to protect residents as it would have been far too difficult to ensure good social distancing (6 ft/2 metres away from anyone) at such events.

But Bobcaygeon still managed to put on a parade!
Notes

Video #1: Canada Day - The 2020 Way

[Music]

[Mitchell] As the voice of your local emergency services, I'd like to encourage everyone to come together to celebrate our country, the community that we live in and those who work every day for the safety of others.

[Rafton] Due to the pandemic, Kawartha Lakes will be celebrating a digital Canada Day titled the 2020 way, encouraging residents across the city to come together online to celebrate July 1st.

[Music] Art Project The 2020 Way

[Taylor] Donna Goodwin approached me about coming up with an idea that could be incorporated into the city's Canada Day event and but it had to be respectful of COVID and I got thinking about it and did a little bit of research and thought 'what would we use' 'we could use flags'.

[Music]

[Taylor] It's not just one or two people involved, it's many people sharing their voices, telling their stories and I believe we're a community of neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods have their own unique story. There is their heritage, their colors, and when we all work together as one, and this is what I noticed during COVID, it didn't matter where you lived in the Kawarthas, we were all working to make each other feel better about what we were dealing with.

[Music]

[Pankhurst] This Canada Day, don't forget to take a moment to celebrate the work our first response and frontline healthcare heroes perform every day to keep Canadians across the country safe

[OPP Officer] On behalf of the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP...

[Rafton] On behalf of all of our paramedics and support staff...

[Mitchell] On behalf of the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service

[Pankhurst] On behalf of the Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service, Happy Canada Day

[Unknown) And on behalf of the entire municipality and all of Council,

[Letham] Happy Canada Day Kawartha Lakes

[Construction Workers] Happy Canada Day Kawartha Lakes

[City Staff] Happy Canada Day Kawartha Lakes

[City Hall Staff] Happy Canada Day Kawartha Lakes

Video #2: 'O Canada' in French by Denis Grignon

Ô Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,

Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,

Il sait porter la croix!

Ton histoire est une épopée

Des plus brillants exploits.

Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
