The money is part of the federal government's Emergency Community Support Fund that is being administered in collaboration with United Way Centraide Canada, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Canadian Red Cross. Earlier this year, the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes received $281,682 to allocate to local groups impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first round will see $93,875 distributed. In Kawartha Lakes the John Howard Society will receive $20,000 for the Community Intervention Program, Five Counties Children's Centre will receive $10,450, for its Help at Home Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton will use $8,500 to run group virtual programs and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes' summer camp programs will receive $18,000. The United Way is also assisting the Point in Time Haliburton County Youth Hub ($20,000), Haliburton Highlands Health Services Foundation, Mental Health Services and Virtual Supports ($19,925) and the community kitchen operated by SIRCH ($15,000). "The impact of this investment is threefold," stated United Way executive director Penny Barton Dyke. "Organizations in our area will be able to help people, especially citizens at risk, with some supports more rapidly, assist in connecting people to agencies that will help them now and going forward, and lastly help strengthen the capacity of our community by working collaboratively." Applications for funding remain open and will be evaluated on a rolling basis. The deadline is July 10.
