- Ross Memorial Hospital looks back at how the COVID-19 Assessment Centre model had changed since March.
Although only 38 tests were completed in the first 3 days of opening on March 16, 2020, those who arrived for assessment (many who had recently traveled) numbered 10 times that. Congestion, safety and patient privacy became a concern.
Harry Stoddart, general manager of the Lindsay Agricultural Society, reached out to offer space at the local fairgrounds. Those working at the centre took their roles so seriously that despite conducting 8,114 tests from March to June, no team member had tested positive for COVID-19.
Close to 2000 people were tested at both locations leading up to May 14, 2020, when testing guidelines expanded to include anyone with one or more symptoms or exposure concerns. Traffic increased significantly with 5,211 people tested in the following weeks.
The COVID-19 Assessment Centre was moved back to the hospital on July 6, 2020. In three days, an additional 984 tests were completed.
Those assessed and tested at home by the mobile team or tested in retirement, nursing, assisted living and group homes were not counted in these numbers. - Publisher
