If you joined us for our online quiz on NYE you may have been privy to to a few delightful bits of good news that sees Globus Theatre head into 2021 with a good deal of hope and positivity. Here is good news number 1...
WE MADE IT!!!! We reached our SOS (Save Our Stage) Fundraising Campaign goal of a hundred thousand dollars. $100k!! An unbelievable achievement made possible by an astonishing number of people who answered our call for help.
From local businesses to loyal patrons and a legion of past performers - you have overwhelmed us with your generosity and words of encouragement.
When we had to cancel our 2020 season and face the reality that the future of live theatre had changed drastically, we knew that it was going to be a monumental task to stay afloat. The bleak financial landscape and the precarious 'hope for the best, plan for the worst' scenarios were horribly reminiscent of getting the theatre off the ground 17 years ago. We didn't know if we had it in us to battle through, but then we remembered that this time we weren't doing it alone! We had regular patrons, an awesome team, supportive local businesses, and a company of determined performers - we could do this!
And so, James picked up the phone to two of our regular patrons John and Sally Eaton and asked the question that changed everything... He asked if their foundation, The John C and Sally Horsfall Eaton Foundation, would consider being a matching funds partner in our SOS campaign...and they said "Thank you." "Thank you for feeling that you could ask us for help." They then (asked a lot of questions about finances and operations! and then...) pledged to match whatever Globus raised up to $100,000. And now they have! Each 10,000-dollar milestone that we reached they matched with a cheque that very week. They have encouraged us and championed our efforts every step of the way and we can't thank them enough.
The money from the SOS campaign has allowed us to get through 2020 with our team intact. It allowed us to open summer camps for kids and produce two small seasons of live programming in Aug/Sept and Nov/Dec. We produced 10 shows over 20 nights keeping staff and artists working and a small but appreciative group of patrons entertained. And it sends us into 2021 with money in the bank and a spring in our step. We are under no illusions that the battle is over, we know it is a tough road ahead of us and fundraising is now part of the ongoing reality BUT without you Globus Theatre would not have had a future, now it does and, knowing that, makes us feel like we can do anything!
