Languid and dying a weak daughter lay Watching the gleam of each crimson crowned ray, That tinted the clouds with a radiant crest, As the sun sank peacefully down in the west, And the stars came forth with their lovely light, And the fair day reposed on the bosom of night, ENTERING THE JORDAN. Then the child looked up with a peaceful smile, " Mother," sho whispered, she wept the while, " Take the last faint gleam of tho lingering day, The child ere the morn will have passed away," Then a tear-drop gleamed in her dark blue eye, - For she knew that her beautiful child must die. . Father, are there flowers in Heaven 7 There are, there are, my beautiful child, Not all the loveliness pure and wild Of the blossoms of carth so dewy and fair, May vie with a leafof the flowers that are there, Here theyvare fragile and wither away, There they are fadeless and never decay. . OVER JORDAN. Then the child's face lit with radiant light, And the mother watched through the long, long night, Till the wild bird caroled his song of joy, And the sun looked in on that beautiful girl, But an endless morn to the child was given, She had gone to dwell with the flowers of heaven, A.D. JIM NICK. Udora, March 7th 1784. esi A near-sighted hen that ate saw- dust supposing it to to be cornmeal then went and laid a nest full of bereau knoks, set on them three weeks, and hatched out a complete set of parlor furniture, and was a pretty fair hen. The woman who said the latest thing out was answered by her neighbor who remarked that hus- bands always came home ear'y.be- fore any one was up. "Do you beleive, sir that the dead walk after death ?"" No doubt of it, madam' I have heard the ¢ Dead March." An engine company in Troy re- cently started the idea of giving a silver tea set to every member of the company who married. So many marriages immediatly follow- ed that the funds ran out, aud the coustom is discontinued. A schoolmaster asked one of his boys, on a sharp, wintry morning, what was the Latin for cold. The boy hesitated a little. "What?" said the teacher, " cannot you tell ?' "Yes, yes," replied the boy; «I have itat my finger ends." A Prairie du Chieu ball, given in honor of a wedding began at ten o'clock one morning and: lasted un-- til the next daylight. = When it closed the bride was druuk, and the husband had been taken to jail for beating one of the guests, ER TE ~ A travler says there is the same difference between a Frenchman and an Italian as thero is between the melons of their respective coun- tries. "In France, buy them with- out fear on the spot--they are all passable: in Italy you may open twenty that are good for nothing but the twenty-first will be devine." The travelers' book in an inn in Switzerland contains the following epigram :-- THE TWO TRAVELLERS. I've lost my portmanteau ! "I pity your grief." All my sermons wero in it | "I pity the thief." A Cornor's jury empanelled to ascertain the cause of the death of a notorious drunkard, brought in a verdict of "Death by hanging-- around a tavern." In Calitornia, a coroner's jury, under similar cir- cumstinces, rendered amore cour- teous terdict--- Accidential death while unpacking a glass." A crossing sweeper was trying to get a gratuity from an excessivly dandified individual, who in reisting urged that he had no change, no- thing but a twenty dollar bill. «1 can get it changed for yer," said the youngster. On secing the dandy hesitate as if from fear of trusting him with a twenty dollar bill, he put it again 'If yer doubts my honor hold my broom." A careless barber, trimming Sheridan's ears, put him in great pain. 'Are you at my left car now?' asked the wit. 'No, not till T have done with the right one.' ,¢ Oh, on- ly I thought you were passing through to the left without going round," answered Sheridan. When an enthusiastic editor de- scribes a bride as bonny, and an en- vious compositor sets her up as bony as was done at Jacksonville the oth- er day, hope for a reason bids the world farewell, and freedom shrinks as the compositor falls at his form, brained by the brother of the bloom: ing bride. On seeing the usual red ticket in his box, his heart leaps with joy, and on his way to sign for the supposed long looked for remittanee he promised to treat. His mortification was most severe when he discovered the sell, but a number of Lis acquaintance enjoyed the joke immensely. businsss A doctor always treated his juven- "whatever might happen to be their symptoms. One day, being called to a boy who was suffering severly, he felt the pulse, and, looking at the mother, with a solemn shake of the head he said. "Worms, madam !' worms !" "Now, Doctor" said the: mother, "it isn't worms at all I tell ye: that boy fell down on the wood-pile and broke his leg and I want you to stop crying " worms" and set it immed- iatly."
