Itis of a great deal more importance to consider well whatwill become of the soul. The casket isof little value, but the jewel is priceless. Here endcth the sermon. -------- Uncle Joe Dopple's Story. We were a hungry jury kept out by an obstinate judge, who told us the case was a very plain one, at the same time taking good care not to tell us on which side it was 80 plain, Most of the testimony on both sides, we were convinced was false; and the problem to be solved was one not usually presented in lawsnits--to find the truth by striking a bal- ance between condradictory lies. Being in for a night of it, and having regained toward each other the good temper wo hill lost in quarreling over the case, the next point was how to get through the time. ¢ Somebody tell a story," suggested the foremen. 'MrDopple, you're an old settler, and must have met with some adventures in pioneer times that would be worth telling. ¢ Well, I've seen rome queer things, but 1 burn or bury And let there be no odium |e « You sce, mother and 'me' belts had got to be #6 that they was the first went for and once they they gg off contented, . If you'll excuse mistakes, I'll tell you about a case that might have turned out a great deal more seriously than this, one.' ¢ Go on,' was urged. Who can gaze unmoved on this sad carnival of death ? 'What train is this that comes so slowly near, Bearing withgdowncast heads those two poor forms, Which but 50 lately were so full of life ? A band of brethren who have found the dead amongst the ruins, And whose gacred charge their brother's child will be, Theirs to supply a mother's, father's love And cheer the sad heart of an orphan hoy. God speed ye brethren of the mystic tie, And guard the "Lewis" who isnow your care. And you, poor brother, in your narrow bed Sleep on ; when the last trump shall sound, And the Grand L above be opened out, When all terrestrial secrets shall be told, Then shall be known that Masonry was gpod That love and charity were not mere words, But active principles with all the Craft. Oh rich ones of the carth, whom God has ¢ Thigsds how it was,' began Uncle Joe, clearmg his vocal hatchway by rolling an immense quid into one cheek. 'When I'd made up my mind to come out here and buy mother, as T call my wife, made me a belt to carry my money in, Ther was the days before nlacks, and bank notes was no great shakes if they got too far from home. -- So land buyers mostly carried what they had in specie, in belts, buckled round their bod- jes--a dodize thgrobbers soon got up to, and toe first thing they did when they got hold of a chap, was to look for his money belt. ¢ Well, I kissed mother and bid her good" bye one morning, and.-sct out to hunt a new home for us, carrying the price of it in hard cash, One night I stopped at a cabin and asked for lodging ¢ You can have it,' was the answer, ¢ that essed . M. No. 22. Cremation.--An Ouinion by Henry Ward Beecher The papers are full of discussion about { the burning of the bodies after death instead of burying them. People are not likely to change habits casily that involve the pro= foundest feelings, the associations and senti- ments cherished in connection with a method of burial practised for ages. There are many practices in connection with burial which would almost incline one to the cremation--we allude to the ou pense which the customs of so compel one to incur. Coffins ha almost, objects of fine art, and Ii practice of ons ex-- ty almost become tions of art are becoming extravagantly expensive, Except as a matter of taste this makes little difference to the rich. But the example is prenicious. The funeral expenses attending | the burial of men who have moved in good society in Brooklyn andNew York $600 to $1500. The most expe wrought arc the most expens with excessive ornaments by way of handles, plate, scrolls, &c., sho retinue of cariages &c., all swell the bill. If by cre- mation the ostentation and extravagance of funerals could be abated, it would constitute a strong motive for the introduction of the custom. But it is bardly probably that the habits o ¢ scr cipation as to send such thrills of alm as have been experienced by the fair friend whose letter we insert: Dear Sir,-- For the love of all you hold seacred do waft through the medium of your inspired pen a sermon upon the horrors of that gustly thing called cremation, 'Of course I beleive that dist we are and to dust we shall return ; and that we shall be raised with renewed bodics, or as St Paul says, ¢ spiritual bodies ;' yet who is there dmougst us that does not hold seacred the beloved boides of our precious wife and children and shudder to have them subjected to the fervent heat that shall destroy them 'utterly' in an hour and a half,' as stated in one of our favorite journals. Horrible ! God forbid that any such scheme shall ever prosper. Do, do, Mr Beecher, use your in- and | firenes fo suppressing the same and oblige, True Friexn. N.B.--Do not toss thisin that receptacle for nonsense termed Waste Basket, Accordingly our 'inspired pen' now 'wafts a sermon' #o all concerned : 1. We are heartly opposed to any compul- sory burning, Whoever prefers to be buried should have an unrestrained liberty in 'the matter. Tf it be pleasanter to decay gradu- ally ina box five feet beneath the ground, giving to the ncar absorbent earth the vola- tile constituents of outcast off bodies, then to be turned speedily to ashes so let it be. 3, Ifthere be those who, lebking forward Feontemplate with satisfaction an urn con- taining the unconsumable particles of their boties, why should they be denied the pre. ference 7 Shall one who wishes to bo ashes be compelled to be dirt?
