Tos. Marrow. Oshawa, Jan, 20th 1875. 'Wooden Walls. Often since the good old Grecian Oracle advised-the Athenians to seek safety within their wooden walls has the sagaci ty of this admonition been experienced ; but it is only very re- cently that the efficacy of wooden walls as a protection against the rav- ages of catgerpillyrs has been sug- gosted. The investigations of science are beginning to point tothe tact that there is some connection between the destruction of forests and the rapid increase of grasshop- pers, and in proof ot the fact that in- sects most injurious do not multiply near woods. The locust of the East is bred on open plains that harbor no birds to foe upon the larve, that gather no moisture to destroy the eggs, and let in the full light of the sun to hasten hatching. ~ Attention is called to the fact that only since the felling of the forests ot Asia Minor has the grasshopper become destructive there. The remedy, of course, is tree planting on a darge scale. ---------- The Gladstone Controversy. The Roman Catholic Church owes a heavy debt of gratitude to Mr. Gladstone. The expostulation he wrote has called forth another appeal to the Catholic world, from its most eminent member, i. e., and piety are counted eminence.-- This appeal is ostensibly g reply to Mr, Gladstone by Dr. Newman, but itis a roply very much of the nature of an echo. The Doctor reproaches with the intensest severity, with his ell known lightning subtility of stroke, those Ultramontanes who as he says, have set the Pope's house on fire, and now want him to quench the flames. But what is all import- ant is this: Dr. Newman defines Papal Infullibility to be strictly ex- clusively, and absolutely confived to the sphere of theological definition, only operative in relation to topics touching the spiritual instruction of all Catholic souls, having no relation to, or possibly of exorcise in the sphere of minor matters of the faith, or discipline, or temporal interests, or any locally restricted concerns of the church, P= Dr Newman's dafination or exposi- tion of infallibility, if practically acted on, would be a sad muzzle for Ultramontane mouths but it would relieve the dogma from the opera- tiou of criticisms both in the Church! and outside, which are doing it un- told and cumulative damage.-- From New Dominion Monthly. --_---------- A Black Record. The dreadful famine which ravaged Persia during the latter half 'of the past year has left a fearful record, In Damghan out of a population of 5000 only 1450 survive, in Teheran 200 died weekly onan avrage for months. The district of Turbet Hadri lost 20,000; the district of Selzwas 24,000; of Naschapur at least 20,000; Hamadan lost between 25,000 and 50,000 ; and Kirmansche' alone 5,000 perished of Hanger. Nerchid, out of a population of 45,000; lost 20,000. -- Making a death record of at least 190,000 who within a few months died of starvation ee et --rn Cause of Sudden Death. Many caeses of death more or less sudden are reported throughout the country cused chiefly, we are told by congestion ofthe lungs. The late severely cold weather is blaimed for this. Bat the cold is only the exciting cause, and we must look further for a pre- disposing cause, We believe this may be found chiefly in the contracted state of lungs | of many persons for want of active exercise, | It is well known that gymnastic exercises or, " training" generally increnses the capacity of the lungs and it may naturally be inferred that inaction will give rise tothe opposite condition ifideed there is no doubt about this. Where respiration is not.full and vig- entire organism is below par, and when, upon, a little extra exertion in the cold, condenceq | air, more blood is forced into the lungs,' both by the exercise and the condenced, ;and Port Perry Jan. 1st, 1874, ne if learning], orous the power of tbe lungs and of the] possibly highly oxonized atmosphere these organs are unable to send on the current of blood, and hence the "congestion.-- Sanitary Journal, to the barn the other day and hung himself with a log chain because his wife playfully kicked his hat off and exclaimed : "That's the kind of a clothes-pin Tam!" "May heaven bless and keep you from your own true love, '* Benja. min Herric," was the way the letter ended. A veteran shopkeeper says that though his clerks are very takative during the day, they are always ready te shut up at night. Josh Billings says : "There ain't anything that will completely cure lazyness, though a second wite has been known to hurry it some," : A Rode Island woman says that she'd rather huve the nightmare three straight nights than tell her husband the flour barrel was empty. When a Chicago man gets rich, he | writes to Pastor publishing houses ! and tells them to send " half a ton! of books with gilton." There is said to be but one devorce in England for tenin America.-- Comparatively few English people marry for fun it would seem. An Annapolis man rode clear to Savannah to lick a fellow who called him a liar, and the undertaker said he never saw a dead man look so much like a quarter of beef. When the postmaster of Vicks- day, twenty-eight men hurried past the house with petitions that they might be postmasters. A musican, noticing that his friends' were wearied at his perfor- mance, remarked: " You aro aware that this is a very difficult passage." «T wish it was impossible," replied one. The magistrate summoned him to answer why he did not prevent the suicide and be replied that he supposed the gen- tleman had cnly hung himself up to dry. A funny joke and all the more pal- atable as its truth can be vouched for, says a New Jersey paper occur red at a prominent church in that State. It seems that a worthy dea | con had been very. industrus in solling a new church book, costing 75¢. At the service in question the minister just before dismissing the congregation rose and said : + All ye who have «children to baptize will please present them next Sabbath." The loudest ranters against the connection of Church and State so far from offering any objection to are the loudest in defence of the Ecclesiastical Exemptions clauses of the Assessment Act, just as if such exemptions were not one phase of this connection. The Times gives some startling figures regarding them, The licensed saloons amountin round numbers to 7,000, graded from $250 to $300 fees each per annum, and yielding last year ® tetal revenue to the city of $527,380. The average daily receipts to keep up with rents and other heavy expenses cannot be less than $20; probatly that is a small average, but it represents a daily total of $140,000 per day paid for drinks. Carrying this through the 365 days that muke up the year and the alcoholic aggregate is $51,100,000. But in addition to these saloons which pay for their privileges there are at least 2,000 unlicensed sa'oons in the city which will bring the total expendjture for stimulants up to more than $60,700,000 or a fraction of $60 for every man, womat and child in the Metropolis.-- Of the hundred dollar grade licenses there are 3f958 which mark the places frequented by the poorer classes in search of spirituous liquors. In addition to these there are 2,058 places that took out ale and beer licenses only, at $30 each, and these are the resorts of persons of moderate incomes, It is es-- timated that four of every six dollars wasted on intoxicants domos from those who depend opon their daily toil forsubistince, = ---- Erps's Cocoa. --GRATEFUL 45D Eoxrong- v6.--The agreeable character of this prepars ation has rendered it a general favorite: Made simply with boiling water and milk.-- Each packet is labelled Jauss Ents?
