The coroner took the jurymen from the neighborhood, aniong them Johan Mowatt and his foreman, Jobn Pe- luse. The corpse lay or & fable in the centre of the Jroom. Some of the jurymen remarked that as soon as John Peluse looked upon the corpse, he started, turned pale, and looked as if he was going to faint.-- He rallied, however, but his subse- 3 A Unmingled joys here no man befal ; ~--Bouthweil Nature to each allots his proper sphere, --Congreve. Widstrand, the Sweedish ex- Royal Secretary, who lives in Minnesota, has reached a hight of economy of which even a Dio Lewis is ignorant. Having read a state- ment that Indian corn contains more than four times as much oily matter as wheat flour, and that one pound of it parched and made into bread is more than equal to two prunds of fat meat, the carefull Swede resolved to test its power.-- Mixing corn meal with water, he, with his own devoted hands, made a cake one inch thick and 7 inches in diamater which he baked in the coal stove. A cake of this size prov- ed more than sufficient for one meal. Three times a day for weeks the experimenter ,ate nothing else, didn't want anything else, didn't lose in weight, and was perfectly well: He must have a costitution before which even hard-boiled eggs might bow and mince-pie blush.-- To rational people he presents the argument that it takes but one hour's work--besides fi to is more than sufficient for one per- sen for ten days, it needn't cost any. body more than five dollars a year to live. ¢ Rational people,' he de- clares, 'will be more satisfied on that fare thanat the best hotelsin Europe or America.! Moreover he observes that half an acre will produce all Valuable Real Estate for Sale, the vegetables one person will need for a year--without hard lobor ; that when the weather is warm it is very produce half a bushel of corn, {which ! quent mo t some curious remarks. The jury having rendered a verdict of death by drowning were dischafged. Mowatt turned round to look for his foreman but he was not there. We stepped out of doors und saw him high up the street, on a half run when he quickly turned a corner. All sorts of enquiries were made, but nothing co uld be heard of him. This, with his turning pale at the first view of the corpse, occasioned some strange surprise anlong the jurors for many days afterwards. John Mowatt was a bachelor of thirty-five, and Peluse had seen about thirty summers. Oo a certain day, about a month after the above indident took place, a lady in deep mourning stepped in- to Mr. Mowatt's store and asked for a pair of boots. While John was trying how the shoes fitted, the lady inquired :--*" You had aman in your store--John Peluse by name--what has become of him ?" 'Yes,' said Mowatt, 'but what has become of him I would give a good deal to learn.' Me then related the story as above stated. 'Strange,' replied the lady, 'and you have not seen him since.' ¢ No,' replied Mowatt, ' I have not seen him since.' 'Yes, you have seen him,' replied the lady. 'I certainly,' said Mowatt, would not contradict a lady of your appear- ance, but I have not seen him to my knowledge.' ¢ Well, then,' said she, 'I am John Poluse, and that subject on whom we held the inquest was the corpse of my husband. My name is Randall, 1 was born in Phiiadclphia. I mar ried against the wishes of my par- ents, John Cennor, a sober, indus- trious man, by trade a shoemaker. He took to drinking, neglected his business, and once struck me while in liquor. We had no family, so 1 resolved, while we were stitching shoes together, to learn his trade and leave him. 1 soon made a pass. able shoe; when I #sszmed male at- tire, came to New York, and you gave me work as a journeyman. The rest you know.' John told the present narrator, some days after, that on hearing this he was dumbfounded. 'Well madam,' said John, 'what are your plans for the future ?' ¢I have not yet formed my plans,' said se. ¢ Well,' said John, ¢ I'liked you ss a journeyman, and as my foreman I was pleased ; suppose we now go in- to partnership for life I' In forty-eight hours thereafter, they were married. She was a fine- looking woman and might have passed for twenty-five. This, perhaps, is the first instance on record, of a wonisn siting as a coroner's juryman on the corpse of her husband. The above is a simple tale of truth. - 0, oh WHOLE NO: 903 pop A aid po state of mifid. The lady was takeén to 'the, Eutow House, and, judging from hed condition, she will not want to ride, on an open engine for some time to' come. i ' A young man with 4 speculative optic called at an insurance officgin' Indianapolis the othér day, and asked . what a policy on his mother's life for 2,000 would cost. He explain- ed that he had bought some real estate, and that as future payments would crowd him some, he thought to realize enough on the old lady's death, as she could not live long, to, help him out.
