Fashionable !|5 The Corpse Undet the Bed. 1% was a dreadful cold night--the com- forter aroind my neck seemed, when "it under my chin, & mass of joo--my ng with every respiration I drew. The light ahead now resolved itself, country tavern. 1 determitied to stop here till morning at all events. - I dismounted, rapped, and the next ingtant_was admitted, A horrible old man with a fat mutton candle led me into a 'musty room where there was a fire, and gave me a chair, 1 didn't like his looks and didn't fancy the place ; but what was I todo? Either remain hete and run whatever risk there might be ot robbery and assassination, or go on and perish of cold almost inevitably, It wasa lonely spot, no habitation within ten miles. The old man was bent and decrepit ; but he had a face ugliness, His son entered--a tall, stalwart rifan with a broken nose and only two fingers on his right hand. "Going to Grass dale fair 7" said he, I answered in the affirmative--~and the moment after was . He would know by that I had money about me, There was a man here this evening going to the fair," he remarked with a strange smile. 'I guesshe won't getthere I sat before the fire till mid- night, ruminating, and then asked to be shown to my room. The old man led the way and once there I locked myself in, I felt frightened, T must confess. The cham- ber was small and its only furniture a bed in he corner, a chair, a table, and an old-fash- oned chest of drawers, My tallow dip gave a dismal light : the wind screamed and rat tled at the windows, the house shook and trembled. Summoning courage, I examined my surroundings more closely--at length looked under he bed, There lay a man, his eyes staring with ghastly horror, his face white, himself motionless! I stag back, This was preceding traveler, evidently, and he would not go to Grassdale fair *indeed; anywhere else in the world.-- He had plainly been assassinated and flung under the bod. it was my turn now. My light went out. Stupified by terror, I crepb back to the chair, A few xioufes passed and I thought I detected footsteps, stealthily and ominous, outside. There was some one fumbling with the leck of the door.-- Great heavens! the agony of that moment returns, and my pen trembles in my fingers ? Iresolved to sell my life as dearly as pos:i- ble, and I picked up the chair, stepped to the door, and stood there with it raised over my head. 'The lock yielded, the door gpen- ed, and down ¢pme my chair with a terrible Merchant Tailor. | owash. There was a shriek, and a scamper- qh Port Perry, March 18, 1875. Vy, you've broke my head with that cheer." He scrambled tohis feet and pulled forth the dead man--the waxen German Chancellor. Fact is I had made a confounded stupid blunder. The fellow I had hit was nobody 'but an English wax-work showman on his way to the fair who had stopped at this place got a little tipsy, and involuntary remained over night, which fully explained the re- mark of the stulwart young man on my arrival. The showman had been first put into my room with his figures, but on my appearance was transferred elsewhere, In the migration Bismark had been overlooked. And now it was my turn to explain, which I |did very lamely; and it might have gone pretty hard with me had I-not proposed to return to the bar below and have an ex- change of notes all round over a pitcher of hot toddy. They are telling a joke, writes 'Eli Perkins,' on Charley Backus to-day. Charley tells it on himself, too.
