Guibord. bord, over whose burial : Jud the ig en nto iot:in this snch-Canadian hee ! Ifent' ora C cter. He was a printer, and for 36 years was in the employ of the late Louis Perrault, and lar, of Louis Perrault & Sons. It is an in- "fact inthe light of recent evi Guibord was for many _ years on intimate Serine of fiend ~~ ship with Bishop Bourget sev- ral ecclesiastics, Perrault. did all the printing the Bishop's palace, and fo (Guibord personally supérintended the com- position and printing of the Bishop's tel other work be- ging to ign missions of the Church. - He became thus personal- Ja jinted with a large number of the clergy, by whom he was greatly admired or his' patience and care- fulness, his honor and uprightness, in all his dealings. A high ecliasti- «cal dignitary of this city lately said, in conversation with a well-known French-Canadian gentleman upon the present Jifficulty, that he regret- ted exceedingly that the censure of the Church should have fallen upon Guibord, for that having known him for upwards of twenty years, he was ' the last man who deserved such a sfortune. 4 The same Fital au- hi 7 stato that as fars nesty, pr, vate virtu, ahd ingen. wity in the broadest sense of the term were concerned, Guibord was with- out reproach. Guibord was a man of more than ordinary ability. When the catechism and hymns for the use of the Indians in the North-West were publish I'Abbe Garin, dmougst ethérs in charge of the mission, consulted Gaibord as to the ; best mode of putting the Indian hl language into type, and of forming the matrices: Although the Indian language was entirely, unknown to him, Guiliord undertook the difficult task of putting these works into . print, and accomplished it so well that for ten years he furnished the Roman Catholic mission in the North-West with the catechism and hymns for the use of the Indians. -- In recognition of these services, I'Abbe Garin and his coadjutors were accustomed to bring Guibord : some of the finest mink and otter skins thal.could be obtained in the North-West. When visiting in Montreal, Gui- bord was one of the first whom YAbbe Garin, Bishop Anemour and others called upon, and the effu- sions of sentiment that passed be- tween them fave no promise that the Plows and simple-hearted printer would inifuture become the object of the anathema of his church. = Gui- bord was foreman of Mr. Perrault's printing _ establishment and was greatly oved by his 'employers and fellow-workmen for his kindness " and'many good qualities." C. O. Perrault, Esq, Vice Consul of France from whom we obtain several of these particulars, says Guibord's punctuality was proverbial among i those who knew him. The lawyers in Vincent street where he then worked, were accustomed to say in reference to this habit of bis: «It is not one o'clock yet, for Guibord bas not passed." Mr. Perrault con- sidered' lim as one of the first print- ers inthe Dominion, He haa great mechanical ingenuity, and was, in fact, a scientific printer. He was the firstwho introduced stereotyping . into this country, and the first book stereotyped in Canada was under Jhis supervision. Mr. John Lovell '+ states that he was personally ac- «quainted with Guibord since 1825, and during all that time Le never know hin to have erred through strong drink or bad company, or to have been guilty of a dishonorable .act. > At the time of his death,he was | "the oldest printer in Canada except Mr. Lovell: Guibord was sixty-two - years of age when he died. Guibord was not one of the found. «ers of the Institut Canadien, but became a member thereof two or three years after its establishment. when the Institut fell under the dis-- pleasure of the Bishop for refusing to throw out ofits library certain sks that were placed in the Index at Rome, Guibord was one of about two hundred members who persist- therqwith,, avd who appealed to Ro against the arbitary course of the Bishop. Guibord died sud- denly on the 18 of November, 1860, but two or three weeks previous, 'when' seriously ill, he sent for a tj: who came and heard hie con- ession.
