i gl the fact that the Customa Officers, Bertram and Henry; Atfanoleled that the iron weighed "more than the weight upon which duty 'had been collected," representing a value of §14j800. The officets having sat, isfied themselves of the correctness of their information ordered the seizure of the bridge on Saturday. seizure was accordingly made but the contractor was permitted to proceed 'with the work of construction until the importers of the iron were informed of the action. «Yesterday a representative of the Ohio Wrought Tron Company at Toronto, Mr Hill, having heard of the affair came to the city with the intention of settling the difficulty. He visited the Customs Department and in. quired for the Minister. "He was informed that Mr Burpee was absent, i "He asked for the Commissioner of Cus- toms, but was told that he was absent also. "Finally he asked who was in charge of the Department, but no one appeared to know, "One of the clerks, however, thought that Mr, R. W. Scott was acting as Minister. "The representative of the Wrought Iron Company thereupon dispatched a messenger to that gentleman, asking him who was sup posed to be Minister of Customs in the ab- sence of Mr. Burpee, "Mr Scott did not know, but he would as- certain, "He did ascertain, and returned an an- swer that he was acting Minister for matters of importance, but not otherwise." doing Back on Dunkin. The Brockville Mowitor says that a large petition'has been sent to the Elizabethtown Council requesting a vote to be taken for the repeal of the Dunkin By-law, and that the township clerk has been instructed to take the necessary-steps, in somplisnce with the petition. ----------e pr -------------- Sixeurar.--On Saturday last the barn of Mr. Ovens, on the 10th concession of Notta- wasaga, was struck by lightniog and com- pletely destroyed, At the time the building contained-a large quantity of produce, to- gether with implements, all of which were scattered in every conceivable direction.-- The most remarkable fact of the story is that although everything was di yed, yet there was no fire.-- Collingwood Enterprize. Distressing Accident. A most terrible and heartrending accident occurred- in the Township of Glanford, on the farm of Mr. John Jerome, last Friday -- It appears that his daughter Christina, a child twelve years old, was driving the reap ing machine which was at work in ove of her father's fields, Her brother was in the same field but not near her. As she was driving the reins got under the tongue and she stopped the machine to get them right. While inthe act of stooping down, the horses took tright and started oft to run away, knocking down the little girl and en- tangling her in the reaping machine, Her 'brother rushed to stop the trightened ani- mals, but before he could do so the unfor- tunate child was' cut to pieces, and when they were stopped she was found under the machine with an drm and a leg severed, and presenting'a most terrible aspect. The poor little sufferer d cd alwmort immediately. Printers' Greek.
