The Baridom of Mar. oY 77 SAT AMBERLY, ONT.' ua. CoLLAxOm, Cp 'ARKERIOR, THB LATFCL EH. | The Estates Valued at $100,000,000. [From thie Aroprior Review.]. "Tho 'fnterest in this care dospens.' Last week Mr, Callander returned to Amnptior, bearing with him the documents Which he bad ded in di g at Amberley, Ont, and which Le fully believes makes good his claim to the title aud estates of Earl of Mar. 8 The documents are three in number, and ave in the form of communications purport- ing to have been witten at different times aid places, by the late Earl of Mar or at his instance, to Mr Hugh Campbell, Mr Cal. lander's 'guardian, The first dated, Glas- gow, Soptland, was written in the year 1825. The writer, who styles himself Erskine Earl of Mar, begins by "stating that accord- ing to agreement, he herewith igus his $n CTA Tr OQUTRNTS OF THR TE TT FOX" { age, and naked "whether he was an illigiti. pate child, stance is worthy of record. On oue occasion (hatoe fe bad. insisted' on knowing the why he was debarred from his herit- Campbell with characteristic bss seized the youth by the should- ers, and deelared that he was the lawful son LE profivced his er 4 ~Eibeate, which Callander reed, and which seemed to be in every respect a bona fide umerit, Calland not remember with any distinctness his mother's name but thinks according to this document, it was Mary Stuart, | Many years ago Mr Callander parted com" pany with his guardiau, who bad all along treated him with much severity #8d harsh- ness. Subsequently the Campbell family left Hawkesbury, and Callander lost all trace of them, Learning that the Mar estates, which bad been confiscated in the last cen- tury, had latterly reverted to the Erskine family, and that enquiries were made for the lawful heis, Mr Callander set about institut ing a search for the Campbell family, with the view, if possible, ot recovering from his guardian's possession. Being in poor cir- cumstances he was unable for some time to take any steps in the matter Having at son aud heir, John Francis Erskine, to Mr Campbell, who is about emigrating to Canada, &s the child being sickly he thinks _ the air of America will benefit him. Along with the child he sends Mr Campbell £1000, clothing, jewellery, silver spoons, &c, mark ed with the initials "R. C.," and a chest of baoks, which had beet bought at an auction from one Mr Callander, for the use of the child, There are then enumerated certain marks on the person of the child, by which he may be identified, and the communication concludes with a solemn declaration to the effect that the child thus intrusted to Mr Campbell's charge ie the true son and heir of the last of the Earls ot Mar by the male line, and the son thus designated is enjoined on the death of his father to pay off all debts the latter may have contracted. Further- nore, the writer expressed a wish that the child should in the meantime be called Richard Campbell. Appended to the com- munication is a note signed William Ham. ilton and John Ross, certifying to the marks on the person of the child, and affirming him to be the heir of the Earl of Mar. The second document was written in Hamilton, C. W., in the year 1839, and sim- ply repeats that the child Richard Campbell, to whose name it is said his guardian has added 'the surname Callander, is the Earl of Mar's lawful heir, and a brief will and testi- ment to that effect is added, the marks on child being again enumerated, and the whole certified and witnessed vy the afore- mentioned Wm. Hamilton and John Ross, The third and last communication is from Quebec and bears the date of 1840. It was written by Mr Hamilton, and informs Mr ° Campbell of the death of the Earl of Mar, and of the fact that the child Richard Camp- bel! Callander bad been left by his will sole beir to the estate and title of the Earldom of Mar. The personal marks are aguin describ. ed and certified to by the same parties, Wm, Hamilton and John Ross. The documents have the appearance of great uge, and written for the most part on ove side of a half sheet of uote paper, the paper being in each case of the same «size, and apparently of the same texture. The documents are written in the hand-writing of the person styling himself Wm Hamilton, with the exception of the signature of John Ross, which is in a different band-writing, though evidently in each case traced by the same hand, On the supposition that the documents are genuine, the parties, Wm Hamilton and John Ross, must have accom- panied the late Earl of Mar, following his fortunes through every visisitude to the last, length in getting funds he started out west on his mission of inquiry, and found the Campbell family where they had settled near Amberly in Brace county. The old man was, however, unfortunately dead, having died two: years previously from a stroke of apopplexy. None of the family knew anything about the papers, the old man having observed the utmost secrecy towards them in regard to the matter, a secrecy which his sudden death set an irre. vocable seal His family remembered, how- ever, that when overtaken by the deadly disease which so soon proved fatal, he call- ed out the name "Richard," in a tone that seemed to indicate regret if not remorse. -- This wus his last intelligable utteragce, the grave soon cloring over him and any secrets he might hold in connection with the foster child, over whose destiny such a veil of mystery seems to hang. Close to an old dwelling, from which the family had removed some years ago, was a little outhouse, securely roofed and floored which the elder Campbell had built, but to which no one but himself was allowed ad- mittance and the character and purpose of which he kept carefully concealed from his family. Naturally conjecturing that the papers sought for had been secreted about this building, Mr Callander and a son of Mr Campbell's proceeded to the place, and hav- ing torn up the flooring they dug into the ground underneath a short distance, when, VALUABLE PROPERTY FOR SALE! Port Perry, April 19, 1876, to their delight they came upon a bottle secured by a closely-fitting pebble stopper, and in fhis bottle was found the three docu- ments already described, The estates included in the Earldom of Mar, which embraces the manufacturing town of Paisley, are said to be worth one hundred millions. A number of relations more or less removed of the Erskine family met at Hamilton, Ont, last Febuary, and raised a sum of $40,000, to be given to the Hon. Mr Blake with the view of prosecuting inquiries as to the heitship ofthe Mar title and estates. It was ascertained that the last lineal Earl of Mar had lived for some time in Canada and died in the year 1840, it was supposed either in Montreal or Chicago, on his way home to Scotland, leaving a will, which up to that time had not - been discovered. © This would corres- pond with the statements made in the documents held by Mr Callander, as in that dated 1839, it stated that the Earl, then in Hamilton, C.W., was about to return to Scotland, while in the communication from Quebec written by Wm Hamilton in 1840, the announcement is made of the Earl's death, the place where he died, however, not the former acting, in the case of the first two of these documents at least, as his Secretary, or amanuensis, From the spelling and general appearance of the writing one would judge Hamilton to have been a man of very limited education, the first proncun, for in- stance, being invariably written with a small 1 Mr, Callander succeeded in recovering two of the books that had been consigned to his guardian at «he time that he, himself a child, was entrusted to bis charge. These are a volume of "Harvey's Meditations," publish- ed in 1821, and another work entitled "Dun. cans Itinery of Scotland," published, as in dicated on the the title puge, in the year 1823. The words "Mr Callander, Tunkerton, June. 1825 appear twice in this book on stwo different blank pages, traced in lead pencil. The date, it will be seen, corresponds with that of the first communication in Mr Callander's possession, in which it was men- tioned that the books had been bought at an auction from one Mr Callander for the use of the Earl of Mar's heir Mr Callander algo found in the possession of his guard. ian's family some jewellery and a number of silver teaspoons on which were engraved the initials *"R. C.," and which he has brought bome with him. The evidenes that Mr Callander, is the being mentioned. The estate is at present held by the Earl of Kellie, a nephew, it is said, to the last Earl of Mar. The personal marks referred to are a scar on the left leg below the knee, another on the left side of the face, a defect in the left eye, and a singular diamond shaped mark near the junction of the the thum and forefinger of the left hand, a rude diagram of which is giveu in one of the documgnts, All these marks are said to be plainly discernable on the person of Mr Callander, and bear every apperance of being of long stariding. F-om interviews with Mr Callander, who is a man of good intellizence and consider- eble shrewdnes, we learn that the eacisest vecollection he has of himself is living in a large house with wide gateways opening into the yard, thgongh which he remembers sce- ing Borses and carriages pass. Here he was attehded by a girl, propebly a nurse; but the whole appears to him like a dream and he éan fix no timé ot locality for the scenes thus vaguely impressed on his memory. -- The next thing he recollects is a number of aren coming and bearing him away from his female attendant, to whom he remembers clinging for protection. He has a vague leetion'of being afterwards in a place y smell, which he identifies now that arising from oysters, he has no rememberance whatever of crossing the ocean, or being on shipboard, though he can recall seeing a bout hauled by horses on a canal and two man walking alongside, one of which carried him for some time in his arms, giving him for his amusement a cane with a yellow knob, which he now Block of Buildings for Sale HE Subscriber offers for Sale that Block of Buildings opposite the Post Office, in the flourishing Village of Port Perry.
