The said dam as it at present stands, backs up the waters of the said Scugog River and cross crecks to a great distance, and still overflows and renders useless a very a of good land belonging to the Crowfl as well ds to private individuals ; in some instances as much as 120 acres being drostned off one lot, and in many cases whole lots belonging to the crown are drowned. 5. Besides the lands actually overflowed By fhe * water occasioned by the said dam there are large tracts of swamp lands in the vicinity of the said river and tributaries which cannot now be drained as the water tm said iver is amised too high to allow a eufficient fall ; but by the taking away of said dam the said swamps can then be cadily drained, and a large tract of now useless land be drained and made valuable, 6. OF OFFICE THE BROWN & PATTERSON MPG CO'Y. WHITBY, ONT. TO . THE PUBLIC. In presenting our Twenty-second Annual Catalogue of Agricultural Implements to the farmers of Canada for the year 1877, we do go with more than an ordinary degree of pride and confidence, from the marked favor and patronag confe 1 upon us, and the steady and in- creasing demand from year to year for our new celebrated Farm Implements. We shall continue as heretofore. a3 manufacturers, to make a specialty of Agricultural Machinery--the Johnston Self-raking Reaper, the Triumph Combined Reaper and Mower, the able for the wants of settlers then in tide townships adjoining the river. 7. The keeping np of the said dam is now | and has for many years been the occasion of # great expense to the Government m the | repair and maintenance thereof and of the | locks at Lindsay, and in paying lock masters | #nd citretaker of the locke and bridges on the | river. 8. Phe adiacent swamps are being clear. ed up, and so drying up the sources of the river that to continue navigation will cer- fainly entail great expense in dredging the | river and said luke all the way from Lindsay to Port Perry, an expense altogether incom- mensurate with the very donbtful advantage of sich navigation, which will at least ben- efit very few, while it isdoing much damage | to your petitioners and others. 9 That through the constintion of the Whitby, Port Perry and Lin'say Railway the necessity for the said dam is removed as the Scugog river will no longer be required fot the purposes of navigation, the said railway running between the same poiuts viz, the town' of Lindsiy and the village of Port Perry, running to the Stugog River below the town of Lindsay and below the said dam dnd locks. - 10: That by the removal of the said dam a very large tract of good land will be re- elaimed (now entirely useless) to the Crown dnd afso-to private individuals, which said lands of the Crown so reclaimed can be sold tb persons owning adjoining lands at remun- erative prices, and will be a source of reve enue to the Crown, as those owning lands adjoining the said river, and who may be allowed to purchase the said lands. 11. And farther, by the removal of said dhor the Government will be saved any fur- ther expenditure inthe repair offand maint n- ance of the said dam, or the locks at the said town of Lindsay andof the bridges across said river, thereby removing a source of large yearly expenditure of money, and great an-- poyance to the Government i i2. That owing to keeping mp of gid : waters by said dam, great inconvenience is occasioned to the ratepayers in going from one side of said river to the other, having in all cases fo go around by the bridge at Uindsay or Port Perry, a distance of severa : miles ; the construction and waintenance of { bridges across that river (such bridges nec- essarily being swing bridges) being a great deal more than the townships interested can afford. 13, If said dam is removed and the river reduced to its original size (there being no necessity for navigation with large boats), the townships can at a small cosu build all the bridges across said streams, thus bene. fisting all the ratepayers generally in said townships, 14. In many cases the sons of your pe- titioners along the said river, and whose nds are overflowed by the waters thereof, are leaving home to get lands in other countrjes--some going to the United States --and if the sid dam is taken down and the lands 80 overflowed thus reclaimed, these young mefi can find employment and be kept at home and be a benefit to the country. well as a benefit to 15. That the said dam at the town of Jbiasay ay be removed, and the said River Seugog reduced to its original (2) That tho owners of lands along the said river, whose lands adjoin that which will bic reciaimed to the Crown the removal of said dam, may be allowed the first right to purchase the sais lands from the Crown at a fair [+ waluationito be fixed: by. the valuators of the Government (3: Your petitioners reccommend that | » work of the 'removal of said dam |' Idcpmmesoat the coming winter, nting to a great extent, zny Sheraby preventing to® great extentun arise the ness which | Sept.29,1870. | M. 0.
