The diligencia had been stopped in a wild, gloomy plave, and the box, taking everything as a [matter of course. He might also be an accomplice of the robbers or be might not ; but in either case, there was little hope of assistance from bim--for any attempt of the kind would certainly bring upon him a severe punishment, sooner or later. I glanced up and down the road, where it wound between dark, over- shadowing trees, but discovered no- thing to give me any hope. I said, as I bent down to pick i up. Now was the all-important mo- ment--the moment of life and death ! All were in a measure off their guard and one quick, furtive glance, show- ed me that thegitl still held my weapons carelessly in one hand, with the other remaining extended for the prize, I lifted the box care- fully ; but, aa I raised myself, I gave a wild, startling yell ; and as the sen- orita started back, I, with the quick- ness of lightning, seized both weap- ons, and wrenehed thom from her. To wheel and commence firing upon the party, was now only the work of a moment. The first shot, fortunately, stretched out the chief; the socond took effect in the one nearest to him j and by the time tbo third bad been sent on its mission, there arose one simultaneous yell of dismay, and the astonished robbers began to scatter in every direction. I bad no disposition to follow them, bowever; another minute they might rally and turn apon me; {and, springing forward I grasped the reins of a freed mustang, and vault- ed into thesaddle, One more glance around me, showod mg the Senarita Paula upon the body of tho chief; her laughter changed to grief, and some of the scattered cowards bring. ing their weapons to bear upon me. "Adoie, senorita and senor |" said I bitterly; 'he laughs best who laughs last !" The next moment I was dashing away down the road, the half-rallind robbers pouring after me a volley, bat fortunately not teuching their mark. They would doubtless have tollowed me in hot pursuit, bug for the wholesome dread they had of my still undischarged weapons. As it was I escaped, and entered the town of Puebla in triumph ; where, it is almost needless to add, a narration of my exploit made me a hero and a lion for the time, Here 1 sold my captured mus- tang and trappings for enough to indemnify' me for what I bad dis- posed off in the way of presents; and the noxt day saw me an inside pass- anger of Lhe same diligencia, en route for Mexico, where I arrived in safety without any further event worthy of note. Mrs, Ingersoll's two danghters are not in society this winter. and in consequ- ence. she keeps reception day or afternoon, bidding every one to come on Saturday: evenings, when the Colonel is'at home. One evenidg the host was absent having been bidden to a feast by David Davis, and there was con- sternation in the face of the guests when they looked around and miss: ed the familiar figure and the hearty greoticg. There is a pleasent family group to welcome one, and Mrs. Ingersoll, with her mother, sister and children, make up a Lappy home, not to be equalled around the fireside of any parsonage in the land. Theirs is the truly happy family, and all their home relations are most beautiful] and tonder. .Mrs. Ingersoll is a handsome woman, tall und a fine figure, with a clear cut, strong face; a quick smile, flashing eyes and smooth black hair. Her laugh is® particularly merry, and there is matter enough in the Inger- soll parlors any evening to keep its clear cadence ringing gaily. This lady wears a very large, brilliant solitaires, and in a crimson satin dress, with point lace around the square neck, 18 a pictare of a handsome and happy matron. No one understands the art of entertain- ing better than she, and each week- ly gathering testifies to her genius, for she shines as Mbusekoeper ns well hostess. The two daughters are quita pretty girls, the oldest, Miss Eva, being possessed of a rich clear voice, a wonderful ctown of brown bair and 8 pair of soft, shy eyes. Miss Maud is a plump young lady, with the roguishness of youth in her eyes and a demure way of say- ing droll things. Mrs. Farrell, Mrs. Ingersoll's aunt, has the same clear brunett face and lively manners, and the group this winter-includes Miss Farrell of Peoria who is a visitor. All the celebrities and the wits in town find their way to the Ingersoll bome, and, confined to no officail or social set, the gatherings are always representative of the whole country. Last week a boyish-looking man with a smooth face and tossed black bair, who'conversed in a quick and graceful way with every onein turn raised innumerable laughs and joined in all with hearty glee, proved to be ex-Rev. Among other things shesproposed to hold weekly prayer meetings at the house for the furtherance of some special work. Her husband shook his head at thia plan, and wold ber that as long as Colonel Ingersoll and his brother both held such extreme opinions upon these matters, he might object decidedly to have such a'meeting beld in the wouse.
